My all time favorite gay diva movie is.............drum roll please....................................

On a Clear Day You Can See Forever (1970) with La Streisand and the late Yves Montand. Liza's dad Vincent Minelli directed.

Streisand flies with it and in some scenes she's actually beautiful. Undoubtedly it's her "vehicle" but I gotta tell ya it just doesn't get old for me.

Cecil Beaton's costumes are beyond beautiful and Streisand's voice is at its peak.

For what its worth I have no patience for The Wizard of Oz. I'm atypically not a real dyed-in-the-wool Frances Gumm fan.

And a great pond scum lifter at that...

But where to start, where to start?

There's always Cher's role in Mask; all things Madonna - in a movie role I'd have to go with her big screen debut as the desperately sought "Susan"; my favorite diva - Tina (forgive me Stronzo) as The Acid Queen in Tommy; Ms. Ross as Billy Holiday; I'll throw in an unconventional Whoopi as Miss Celie (her best performance, IMO); Parker "can I get a fallafel, seltzer water, and a side a babaganooj" Posey from Party Girl; and then there's always Dorothy, Rose, Blanche, and Sophia...

I would have to add Leslie Caron in "Gigi" (okay, she may not be a gay diva, per se), directed by Vincent Minelli as well. I mean the colors, the costumes, the sets, the songs, the story of a young girl becoming a well, woman. Add in Maurice Chevalier, Louis Jordan and Herminie Gingold (sp), one of the Gabor sisters, oh, and don't forget the "scene at Maxim's".

    That is gay?

Oh, well. I guess you learn something new every day. I just thought it was the blue print for my personal fashion sense. How about "My Fair Lady"?

jeffrey kindly note use of word 'superfluous' ... I'm out of weighty stuff for the day alas. Had my fill.

I guess Vanessa Redgrave doesn't count as a "gay diva" but I'm addicted to everything she's ever done in her acting.

There's a wonderful Merchant Ivory film called The Bostonians that stars the late Christopher Reeve too.

There's something other-worldly about Miss Redgrave. She becomes the role no matter what the film.

**note to next mod viewing this thread:

Would you please correct my thread title spelling of the word "superfluous"?

It's fucking with my obsessive compulsive disorder and I'm low on my meds.

Thanks and I love you all.

    So, Stronzo...

YOu are going to have to qualify for us the properties a movie must possess to be called a gay diva movie. I have a sneaking feeling most of what resides in my collection would qualify,

Well. It's more the actress than a movie's content to me naughty.

In light of my Redgrave-straying from the flock post I'll list those who apply as gay divas (please feel free any and all to amend/add to this list):

    In descending order of gayness:

    Barbra Streisand
    Bette Midler
    Judy Garland
    Cher
    Madonna
    Joan Crawford
    Bette Davis

I'll give Miss Audrey Ruston-Hepburn honorary status because she just fucking rocked my world. But I suspect she's in her own category naughty.

Subcategory: Gayest Camp Movie (mainstream) of all time?

Bar none: Whatever Happened to Baby Jane

Well, in that case I'll take back my "Gigi" nod and submit Bette Midler in "The Rose".

Totally agree on Vanessa Redgrave, an exquisitely sublime actress and can say that in my conversations with her over the past couple of years a deeply caring person.

    Bette Davis in Now, Voyager.

The journey from stifled self-doubt and self-loathing to an effervescent, divatastic 'coming out', complete with the double-phallus imagery of Paul Henreid's symbolic love act of lighting two cigarettes to share.

Oh, Jerry, don't let's ask for the moon. We have the stars.

That is all I have to say.

    Superb Alex.

My favorite scene is when she "kills" her mother on Beacon Hill with her declaration. The emancipation of Charlotte Vale. Stunning.
