I thought the Supremes were supposed to give us their ruling(s) on gay marriage in June, but I've not heard anything about it. Does anyone know what is happening now?

They don't have dates But announcements come out the next two Mondays and people are predicting it's going to later rather than sooner. They are predicting DOMA is toast and that Prop 8 is up in the air.

People have been waiting since Nov, I think for a ruling on the Voting Rights Act, some times they just take their own sweet time.

The Supreme Court generally announces its decisions on Mondays in June. That would be all Mondays in June. If there's a lot of cases, sometimes they'll release on a Thursday or two in June, as well. They've even been known to spill over into July, keeping folks on the edge of their seats longer than expected.

Gay shit tends to come last. Expect an announcement on 24 June, maybe 27 June if they push the envelope. But maybe they'll surprise us with a ruling tomorrow.

This week they are releasing opinions on Monday and Thursday at 10am...as it's mid-June I'd say we could get affirmative action and voting rights act case this week, but they still have about 18 other cases pending which could come out.

By end of next week hopefully at least a few big ones...I wouldn't be surprised if gay marriage are last cases released but Roberts may want to announce VRA case (assumptions are he is writing to strike it down). Kennedy is supposed to be writing both gay marriage cases and the affirmative action case (argued in October) so he is a busy man.

You can't hurry love;
No, you just have to wait.
Love don't come easy;
It's a game of give and take.

arkfarmbear, it will be either monday, june 24 or thursday june 27 about 10 am EDT. CNN will carry it live, as will CSPAN.
and yes, there are demonstrations, no matter what the verdict is, nationwide at 5:30 pm, local time in hundreds of communities around the nation. Little Rock is on that list.
i hope you are looking forward to it. it will be a BIG DEAL in Santa Cruz CA.

I'm bi and a fag hag, so I'm the farthest thing from a homophobe, but I don't get what the big deal is about gay marriage. The tax benefits are the only real reason gay guys want to get married, yet gay people are already very wealthy, so isn't gay marriage just a tax break for rich guys???

A few points:

1. According to an article I read last week on nbcnews.com, in America gay people are not as wealthy as straight people, on average.

2. The "benefits" of marriage pertain to health insurance, inheritances and medical decision-making, but not to taxes. There are no tax breaks for marriage that I'm aware of. There are tax breaks for having children (dependents).

3. I think the "big deal" is just a matter of general principle. I don't believe in marriage of any kind, and I find it outrageous that government at any level either sanctions or refuses to sanction people's intimate relationships. But as long as government does play that role, it's blatant discrimination to give straight relationships a higher legal standing than gay relationships.

4. Also, the horror with which certain people regard gay marriage makes it fun to watch its steady march toward normalcy.

Here is an article about gay wealth from a non-homophobic source that proves how much wealthier they are...

Gay Travel Statistics - Home Around the World

The inheritance issue you mentioned is the biggest tax issue, also there are different ways to file your taxes, married filing jointly has lower rates than single.

I do agree that there should be no government sanction of any marriage.

Here's a statistic from that article: "For gay men and women, the average household income is $81,500 per year, almost 80% above the average U.S. household income of $46,326."

That's hard to believe, but I certainly can't say it isn't true.

Tax breaks? Maybe on a miniscule percentage of estates (and Edie Windsor and Thea Speyer weren't a couple of "rich guys"). Year after year, though, marriage will mean the infamous "marriage penalty" on taxes if the spouses earn similarly.

The financial impacts never even crossed my mind. I want to marry my partner because I love him completely, and as long as my government exalts straight couples that love each other with marriage, they'll do it for us. I also want to be able to visit my partner in the hospital as family, if that ever becomes necessary, and not be coerced to testify against him in a court of law -- because we are one legal unit. In other words, it's the life aspects and not the money aspects that matter. I'd marry him even if it meant our income and estate taxes doubled.

Quoted post removed because it contained hate speech.[/QUOTE]

We're clearly looking at a troll here folks.

"The tax benefits are the only real reason gay guys want to get married, yet gay people are already very wealthy, so isn't gay marriage just a tax break for rich guys???"

Are we seriously engaging this nonsense folks?

Hell was just raised on the forum (not unfairly so) when there was mention of minorities being predisposed to crime. Can we please shout this stupidity down as well?

I agree with the statement generally. I think broad based, overarching statements though are troublesome.

Marriage is fundamental but the State can put limits on it (i.e., no incestual marriages, no bigamy, etc.) However, I don't see a basis for denying same-sex marriage

They just keeping pushing it back. Seems like a distraction to me. I mean while everyone talking about it, the Monsanto Protection Act was passed, which is fucked up itself. I agree, equality is important, but I think it's just being dragged along as long as possible by the government.
