Actually, emoticons aren&#39;t l33t5p33k. Emoticons began in 1982, long before AOL existed. They&#39;re used to indicate gestures and tone, very difficult to do online.

I used to hate emoticons. Then I realized I kinda needed them. Tone more often than not just isn&#39;t there in writing, unlike speaking. So without a wink - - my sarcasm sometimes just looked in e-mail like I was being mean. :-&#092;
