I'm getting my tattoo done on my chest for the simple reason that i know it will be covered, because my profession demands tattoos be unseen. And hell, I know I'm fat and hairy...I have the tact to know not to wear tank tops or muscle tops, so the only people I really ever plan on seeing my tattoo are people that I sleep with. Maybe some ppl do get tattoos so they'll be looked at, but it's for the purpose of "why is that important to you?" not "oh let's slap on some celtic crosses here, come cartoon characters there, and a few hearts and butterflies over here. great, now they'll look at me FOR SURE!".

I have two tats. I keep them covered for work, but in the summer, I like being able to show them, especially on the beach.

Interactpres, good that you are getting your tattoo. I personally have four. Two I designed myself, one a scorpion and the other a Chief Wahoo for my beloved Cleveland Indians. I have taken more shit for Wahoo, but that has to do with how lousy the Tribe will be this year. The other tattoos, people ask me about them. I have body hair and I wear tank tops and sleeveless shirts all the time. I really don't care what ignorant people like pdxman think. It is a free country. If you don't like a TV show, change the channel. If you don't like the way someone looks, don't stare. Nobody has ever said anything to me about either my tattoos or my tank tops. They are usually too busy asking me how I do this exercise or that exercise. I have a thing for latin and use it freely when designing my tattoos. One features latin for truth and justice and no, I did not base it on the Boondock Saints (both great movies by the way) as it represents my job. Anyhow, pdxman is a hoser who should concentrate on himself and his inadequacies which I am sure are legion. Interactpres, go for the tattoo and don't be ashamed about not wearing a shirt and showing it off.

No matter how hot the person is, if she/he has a tat or a piercing, I skip right past. And in person, the same thing -- though I'll admit that a couple of times I've discovered a tat on someone when we're both already naked and way horned up. In that situation, I've gone ahead with, um, the deed. But had I seen the thing earlier in the process, I'd probably have just said 'see ya.'
What, in god's name, possesses people, ESPECIALLY unattractive or marginally attractive people, to do this crap?

Right. It looks good or feels right at the "moment" , or that time period in your life, but I have seen some nasty ass tattoos on old men that maybe when they were first applied "looked cool".
