Thanks Kink!

You should see the book called Tahiti Tattoo,
By Gian Paolo Barbieri
It is all about the art of Tattoo in French Polynesia.

Beautiful men in ink.

That's an awesome tattoo man, very nice work by whomever did the ink. Must have taken a very long time, the one I have isn't even half that big and it took multiple sessions to complete.

Yea, nice piece of work, really, though the image isn't my style really - when it comes to seeing tattoos, I'm a sucker for the smaller ones with more obvious symbols (swords, hearts, etc).

My tattooed-all-over ex-g/f had a dagger in a holster tattooed around her left ankle, she said that it was worn there by 19th-century mexican ladies with cruel intentions, like assassins. Anybody has heard of that and can say something about it? I think now that I have a bunch of tattoo experts here, I can ask them.

I too am interested in symbolism Bruce.
Polynesian Tattoo is very rich in symbolic meaning.
Since it's an island, the symbols are naturally from the sea.

The Manta Ray is the symbol of Freedom and Power.
The two male Tiki heads (one under each wing of the Manta) are symbols of protection.
The Turtle is the symbol of long life.
The Female Tiki on the Turtle's back represents my wife whom is very ill.

Also, I got the tattoo on the last day of 2004, a totem for new beginnings for me and my wife.

I guess I'm one of those KinkGuy calls assholes. Although I have seen a few tattoos that were really quite nice, I have never had the desire for one, and find a majority of the ones I've seen to be a bit of a turn-off.

I guess part of not wanting one on myself is that I have never been able to come up with a design I would want PERMANENTLY embedded in my skin, and I think just picking a cool design off the wall and saying "put it on me" is a bit crude.

I did pierce one of my earlobes years ago (in 1977), long before it was cool, then added another to the same earlobe the next year (double & more piercings were not in vogue for many many years after I did mine.) Now it seems de rigueur to have 20 or 30 lbs worth of hardware in various parts of the body. Just my opinion, but I think the tongue piercings are ridiculous (I've never yet met anyone who can still speak clearly with one, despite their claims), the thing through the eyebrow would absolutely drive me nuts, and for the life of me I cannot imagine why anyone would want to punch additional holes in his cock.

But back to the original post - research! Do your homework before you get inked. Ask other people about their tattoos and their artists. Best of luck to ya!

Well I didn't mean you......specifically. You aren't an asshole, I don't think. :D

My tatts and the huge back piece I had put on my SO, were all designed by myself. I control the design, size, placement, color and have an incredible artist who relates to my images. The one on my thigh goes from the groin to about 4" above my knee and required almost 8 hours.

My advice is always, "make sure you love and relate to the symbol"...it's going to be a part of you forever.

Good luck! Enjoy the journey, but remember, one gets what one pays for.

I would greatly prefer an artist that is booked solid and makes you schedule well in advance and costs more per hour than all the others in town. Just one indicator that he/she is good. Make sure you also really go over his "book." Don't schedule "blind" just because the shop has an opening when it's convenient or on the spot. Shops will encourage you to schedule and push you towards the guy with the openings...usually the newest artist on staff. Don't do it if you haven't met the him/her....meet the the person inking you and make sure you are comfortable with their attitude and how they relate to you. A good artist will acknowledge your fears, concerns and freely answer your questions. And there is little they haven't seen, inked or experienced. DO NOT be shy either in your questioning or about your body. Talk to your inked friends, ask strangers "who did your ink?" We love to yak about our ink....as you can tell. :D

Don't want to let that slide, so... anybody can tell me something about that kind of symbol?

That's always been my feeling as well. I don't think I've ever seen a symbol, word, or design that I'd not get completely sick of after a decade (or a year even).

But I'm a poor test case. I couldn't imagine a "vanity" license plate or even a bumper sticker that I'd want to be stuck with long-term. ;)

Call me fickle; call me fluid. Just don't stick me with a tattoo that I'll end up resenting in a month.

Having said that, I've seen some beautifully eye-catching tat work. (And plenty of crude "jailhouse" scribbles from working with inmates.) I certainly can't say that I've never been attracted to a tattoo on someone else.
