i don't think Taylor was as broke as you think. his family seems to have money. They raised eight children and at least a few of them seem to regularly go on out of country vacations/trips/whatevers. even if there wasn't a lot of money, they were taught how to make what they have go a long way.

also, i believe that Taylor is actually involved in a couple of the businesses. he goes on the research trips and learning trips. he is just as invested. Garrett also comes from family money. we don't know how much he necessarily made on his own.

Probably just a lowlife. These people aren’t real journalists bound by any code of ethics. They just write trash hoping it will get traction and what better way to do than by inflaming passions with blatant racism and bigotry.
