We've been discussing sexy movies and sexy stars in the forum but we haven't touched on one of the reasons we like the movie theater to be dark: movies that make us cry.

Embarrassed to be seen wiping your eyes during the movie? Afraid to be seen with puddling eyes? Does the nose run at importune times and you're afraid they'll know why?

Tell us about the movies that have done this to you. One film or a bunch of them.

And rate them, not with stars, but with hankies, 1 to 4.

For instance, over the 3 years of the release of LOTR I attended each with my sons and their wives. Totally unexpected, the beauty, atmosphere and emotion of those 3 movies brought me to tears often. It probably helped that I had read the books and Peter Jackson's love of them showed in his direction.

My sons would elbow me, amused that their old man was making a damned fool of himself in a crowded theater but my daughters-in-law were elbowing their husbands for not reacting.

    Fellowship 2 Hankies
    Two Towers 3 Hankies
Return of the King 4 Hankies

I've got a few more but I'd like to hear how you guys feel about Tear Jerkers.

    Hmmmm....

I'm a bit hesitant to admit those flicks that caused me to shed some tears but here are a few:

Lonesome Dove 1989: When Gus (Robert Duvall's character) dies. 4 hankies.

Scent of a Woman 1992: When Chris ODonell's character confronts bitter Colonel Slade (Al Pacino) and convinces him not to commit suicide. 2 hankies.

On the Beach 1959: Last few scenes as the radioactive cloud bears down on the nuclear war survivors in Australia and the American submarine heads off to.... 3 hankies.

Cabaret 1972:Final scenes as all the nice plans come undone. 2 hankies

Cold Mountain 2003:Final scenes. 2 hankies.

Saving Private Ryan 1998:Tom Hanks character dies. 2 hankies.

    and others...

Javierdude22: You cried a lot didnt you Naughty?!...from the top of your head? Very good.

I did cry at Tom Cruise's Last Samurai...but for a very different reason. Does 4 I-want-my-money-back's count?

Ok, yes I cry every now and then at movies. Naughty, you mentioned a few of mine already, but here goes:

Absolute number one with a thousand hankies is Terms of Endearment, awesome, yet terrible. When she says goodbye to her kids there's no stopping the water.

Ghost 3 hankies, yes that one actually hurts me nowadays, so I don't watch it anymore.

Dead Man Walking 3 hankies, the end is amazing. I can see why it was dirfficult for Sean Penn to play that character.

Schindler's List doesn't get me crying untill the end, when they show the actual people from the film with the actors. It hits me then how real everything that happened in this movie was, and that it was only 60 years ago when freedom wasn't so normal, but horror was. It's so unimaginable, the movie makes it all very imaginable. O yeah, 3 hankies.

There is this movie which name I don't remember nor the actors names, but it made me cry very hard actually. It's about a father who's wife died, and he has to raise 5 kids on his own. But he also has to work, so they are left at home to take care of each other. People notice that and take the kids away and put them in separate homes where they get beaten a lot and molested. The father does everything to get them back, and builds his own house, and remarries. In the end he finally gets his much older kids back. Awesome. 4 hankies

Sophie's Choice is awesome as well. The cry moment for me is when she tells about her war experience and she and her kids get separated. Eventually the German ward tells her she can only kep one of the two, she has to choose whom. She can't so they take both, but right then she says 'Take the girl!'. The girl gets taken away. And that is war...3 hankies

Cry Freedom with Denzel Washington. Awesome film with great acting. I had never heard of Steve Biko by then (I was 12) and if movies can get such a message across, koodos. 2 hankies.

    Well, thats it I guess.

Hmmm .... TSB sits down and thinks for a few minutes ...

Schlinder's List - when the actors walk with their real-life counterparts and place the stones on the grave. Definitely 4 hankies!

Love Story made me cry - well, I was young and vulnerable! I'm sorry!! 3 hankies

Philadelphia. Mr Hanks - that was acting! 30 hankies.

Didn't-Make-Me-Cry-But-Definitely-Gave-Me-A-Lump-In-The-Throat: Dead Poets Society - at the end when Ethan Hawke, followed by some of the other boys in the class stand on their desks. Oh Captain, My Captain. 5,000,000/10.

The (TV) movie was After the Promise and starred Mark Harmon.

The Internet Movie DataBase is a great place for checking up on things-you-can't quite-remember. I too couldn't place the name of the film but remembered Mark Harmon played the father; a quick look on IMDB and robert is your father's brother!

Say Goodbye Maggie Cole (the song still brings a tear to my eye)

It's not a movie but a TV commercial that gets me. The one with the soundtrack by Sarah McLachlan about abused and abandoned animals. If I don't change the channel when it comes on, I dissolve into a puddle of tears.

don't click the link without tissues:

I change the channel and then go hug my dogs. It's a horrible ad! Overly effective in my opinion. Don Draper would be proud.

is it the one with "In the arms of the angels", that is always on Animal Planet?

fucking heartbreaking...reduces me to tears everytime, the song, the sadness on the animals faces and in their eyes is so pronounced that nobody can *ever* convince me that animals do not have feelings, or emotions... i cannot bear it...i wish i had 100 million dollars to donate...

i am crying just think about it.

    i cannot watch it...
