Sad news on such an otherwise bright sunny day.

Sleep peacefully, Senator. You will be long remembered for the good you did for this nation.

trying to start a fight in a mourning thread eh hout?

typical

Politicians are far too overrated... regardless of what side of the aisle they/we/you are on. Bridges, tunnels, highways named after such loathesome shit is laughable. If it's so tough and humanitarian why do so very few leave, and so many spend millions to stay in. Death for any family is sorrowful, but far more constructive ppl died today... we're more worried about how Michael Jackson died instead of the myriad of homicides that have occurred in Detroit in the last 3 weeks.

Can't believe I saw this piece about Teddy in SAN FRANCISCO of all places today: "Even though he was the least gifted of the Kennedy clan and cheated his way through Harvard after flunking Spanish and used the death of his two better educated and articulate brothers to launch his Senate campaign and ended up causing the death of a young volunteer worker by driving under the influence and then denying and delaying the report of said accident, even though he cheated on his wife and mistresses chronically, even though he refused to have wind turbines built off Cape Cod because they interferred with his view of the ocean but felt it necessary to build them in "less influential" parts of the state, even though he changed Mass. law so Kerry could be replaced by a special election rather than the acting Gov (just in case he beat Bush in 2004), and yes, even though his final letter tohis beloved state was an appeal to change the law AGAIN to have the Gov pick his replacement rather than a special election....it's sad that he died.

Wow.

Maybe they should name a bridge after him... I have the perfect spot...

It has been my privledge to live in Massachusetts and to have had Senator Kennedy representing me. A man of great wealth and privledge who spent his entire life working to help those who had none.

Hear, hear and beautifully put.

As a fellow resident of the Commonwealth I share your sentiments 100 percent. Fitting today is so lovely and the perfect opportunity for reflection on the life and accomplishments of the Senior Senator from Massachusetts.

Nowadays 77 years old seems early to die. His death was the lead story on BBC News this evening. If it hadn't been for Chappaquiddick I think he'd have been a presidential candidate.

Although he was often characterized as a "liberal lion", and vilified by many on the right as a hardcore pinko lefty, one of Ted Kennedy's great qualities was a willingness to reach across the aisle to get truly good things done. I hope we can find more politicians who are willing and able to do that as we move forward.

Though the passing of Teddy was expected based on his diagnosis, the example he set in his time of public service was exceptional. Nobody including Teddy himself could ever explain how Mary Jo and a 1967 Oldsmobile Delmont 88 ended up in a river. Like many, I question that episode as well. However, when I take that incident and compare it with his efforts towards helping the common man throughout his political career, one would tend to wonder about the true things that happened.

Teddy was born into a family of incredible wealth and power. Of the 4 Brothers, Teddy was always the most considerate of, and the one who fought hardest for the common man. His continued representation of the people of Massachusetts in the United States Senate, winning election and re-election again and again. He is living proof of a large number of people who were satisfied and had confidence in their representation.

Teddy was also the hardest worker when it came to creating unification in thought and reaching across party lines to work with those with ideals he philospophically opposed. This makes him an extremely wise and hard working individual. Ultra Liberal individuals disliked Ted because he was good at creating a meeting of minds with members of the Republican Party. Ultra Conservatives hated him for the same reason. He was able to reach to those whom would at least listen to an alternative point of view.

Rest in Peace Teddy, I may not have always agreed with you, but nobody worked harder to earn my respect than you did. You have truly earned a peaceful eternal rest.

Great men have great faults.

Teddy was a great man.

Who stands a close second now that he's gone?

I've just driven part of the route taken from The Compound in Hyannisport to The Kennedy Library at Columbia Point where the Senator will lie in repose.

At several intervals I saw street signs in yellow lettering - like over-the-speed limit signs -(installed my local towns along the route) which read things like "Thanks Ted, from a grateful nation" and so on..

I gotta tell ya it was pretty moving.

Today was a singularly beautiful late summer day in the Bay State. Seems fitting.

Everytime his name is mentioned, I still think of poor Mary Joe.

Ted Kennedy embodied the negative stigma of a politician moreso than any politician in recent history. Excesses, sound bites, wealth, deception, murder, infidelity, constant family crisis, power, etc.

My thoughts go out to his family for his passing. But Ted Kennedy represented everything wrong about politics and was no more a role model than Plaxico Burress.

Mary Jo's family has never wanted for a thing since Chappaquiddick. They chose not to delve further into the bridge affair since they were set for life after her death by the Kennedys.

Like it or not the Kopechnes had their price too. No one's perfect.

The good the Senator did far outweighed the stigma of Chappy.

Kennedy never professed to be a "good Catholic". It's been others since his death who've assigned him that dubious distinction.

In my knowledge of him he was not religious in the least.

Only a state as idiotically liberal as Mass will go ahead and justify (and vote) Caroline Kennedy as senator... watch it unfold. Barney Frank??!! really?
