OK, so here's my take as a Gainesville resident for almost four years. It's ok. Used to be better. Now the economy sucks. Can't give your home away if you choose to sell, but you can certainly buy a lot right now if you're looking. Mine will be for sale in a couple of months if you're interested!

It's not as hot as you may think, well, at least Gainesville. We're midway between the two coasts so we get a lot of breeze. There are beautiful hills and horse farms just south of us. Not a lot of older folks here in Gainesville. Also, don't know your political persuasion but Gainesville is a little blue dot in the middle of a big red state.

I don't care one bit for Orlando. Well, all of Orlando anyway. Downtown is very nice, because very few tourists go downtown. That damn mouse is everywhere there.

We're leaving here because of work, along with just about everyone else. The economy has really turned so bad that even though we're doing ok with royalties from music, there's just so little work around here that it's just not fun anymore.

Good luck.

I love Florida. The armpit is the panhandle. Orlando has terrible traffic due to everyone rushing to the theme parks, especially in the morning. There is a gay community there, but Tampa/ST. Pete and Fort Lauderdale are more gay friendly. It's colder in Orlando. Now it's 46. last might it went down to 39 according to Wunderground.com
Having been born in the panhandle of Oklahoma I have a fondness for panhandles of states and feel they're often held in low regard because of how easy it is to get from one side to the othere quick with little more than a sneezeing fit and thoose who live more to the centere of their states are jealous. I also have a fondness for panhandlers soo maybe I am not the best judge of panhandles~~or maybe I am.

I am from Pennsylvania, went to college in NY and then lived in Maryland and Delaware - thinking I had to endure the grey NE miserable weather 6 months or so every year. Then I moved to Gainesville - and thought I had died and gone to heaven. Great place - some change of seasons, very green, cold today 30's-40s, but the sun shines every day and Spring will arrive in February. The University of Florida provides limitless education and emplyment opportunities - and there is alot of open spaces and low cost of living (relatively speaking). We are 2 hours from the tourist spots and traffic of Tampa and Orlando. Come visit Gainesville sometime - you may love it!!! BY the way - you have beautiful eyes!!

Pinellas County (St Pete to Tarpon Springs) is pretty much built out. Pasco County, north of Tampa still should have some space and has a long history of having nudist resorts. It's away from the gulf so access isn't to easy but unless you are really into boating. fishing, and beaching a pool will work just fine and be right outside your family room door.
Really, buy a house with a pool! It doesn't add to the cost because some people are afraid of the upkeep or kids drowning. Believe me, taking care of a pool is far easier and more pleasant than an equal area of lawn.
