It is to try and give people more daylight hours for work. If we are short people at work, we can't always finish because of darkness. If they don't move the clocks back, some people won't get mail for who knows how long.

First of all, daylight savings time (or "summer time" in British English) begins in the spring and ends in the fall. The purpose is to take advantage of the extra sunlight we get in the morning so that we'll use less energy in the evening.

In the U.S., daylight savings used to begin on the last Sunday of April and ended on the last Sunday of October. In 2007 it was extended, so it now begins on the 2nd Sunday in March and ends on the 1st Sunday of November.

It probably depends on how many hours of light and darkness you get (which is determined by how far you live from the Equator), as to whether DST is of much use.

For example, in India, the sun always rises between 6am and 7am and sets between 6pm and 7pm. Whereas in the UK, during summer it is light from 4am-10pm but in winter it is only light from 8am-4pm.

That's a common myth. Farmers are up at dawn (or before) regardless of the time of year. They opposed the implementation of daylight savings time, because it meant they lost an hour in the morning that they would normally have used to get their products to market.

I know in Canada, it used to be just before Halloween. We have changed to keep in line with the USA. I think more of the year is now on Day Light Saving time than not. (though I could be wrong on that)
