The proslavery liberal idealogy here in the U.S. in the 1800's held that slavery was a just institution because slavery was the status in which Africans could enjoy the most practical liberty in light of his circumstances.
First off, get your terminology correct. Africans were brought to this country not to be slaves, but as
indentured servants. MAJOR difference between the two.
Indentured servant - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
How can we determine this? Because African servants existed in the North as well as the South! The settlers in the North did follow the terms of the indentured servant and let their workers free after they finished their term of service. The settlers in the South, however, saw the servant as a means of getting work done for cheap and saving money. That's why they pushed to make their servants permanent property so they can benefit from their labor forever.
So no, slavery WASN'T a chance at liberty for Africans. And it wasn't a "liberal" ideal because both Republicans AND Democrats in the South wanted to own slaves.
That's not to say that there wasn't an anti-slavery liberal movement at the time. However, a poster above inferred that Lincoln's abolishing slavery was a liberal idea. Mine is a counterargument.
Lincoln's move to free the slaves is a good one and a major step towards the civil rights for Black people. Nobody denies that. However, it really wasn't a political move to benefit any party, but more of a financial maneuver. See if you can keep up with this one:
The South were breaking the rules of indentured servitude by forcing people who were only legally bound to work a few years to working for them indefinitely. The North saw that they were making more money due to it and called the South on it. Hence the arguing, the eventual secession of the Southern states and then the Civil War. Lincoln's motive was to "free the slaves". But technically, the African was never a slave to begin with. Because
even with Lincoln's actions, those who were still under an indentured servant contract STILL had to complete their term before truly being free. So who was Lincoln really freeing? Nobody. It just stopped the South from making money illegally on indentured servants by forcing them to obey the servant's term limits.
And before you or anyone else decides to jump down my throat with any kind of ridiculous rant on racism, then think about this: If the African was
truly free after Lincoln freed the slaves,
then why did it take nearly another century before Black People were given all of their rights? What's good about the title if you don't get the benefits behind it?
You should learn to look past the party affiliation and beyond skin color... then you can see the real story.
