All this boils down to is that there are folks proud to be American, proud to be who they are and aren't afraid to show it, even if they are a bit "eccentric" and not well informed.
Going TOO far is deadly to a career. E.G. Dixie Chicks. Fine, they don't like Bush. No prob. Speak your mind. But don't take American issues across the pond and whine to the world about it. That's what most people are pissed about. Not their opinion, just the way they went about expressing themselves. America's problems are America's problems, at least that the way it should be and most southern/country folk will agree with that and defend it to their last breath.

Or, sometimes it just introduces you to a new and truer audience. For example, the Dixie Chicks' recent record was a number one, multi-million selling smash despite the lack of support from country radio.

God bless Natalie Maines.

I didn't say their opinions didn't matter. Just the way they expressed it.
You mean, with their mouths?

Yeah, I don't think opinions expressed from women's mouths matter either. Glad to see that we're in agreement on this point.

There you go. They lost the mainstream support by their actions, went into hiding for a bit, and have emerged a "different" group. But still not without a degree of public ridicule and hatred of their previous actions. Again, $$'s rule.

I would like to read the book, though, if for no other reason than that a Republican was analyzing a very unrepublican demographic.

Colonel, I'm a bit surprised. I would have thought that, in this day, such people would be overwhelmingly Republican.
Or do I misunderstand what you mean by '(un)republican' in your second reference?

 Obviously you don't see what I am saying. I don't care if it was Willie Nelson, Loretta Lynn, Garth Brooks, etc. They pissed off the public by bitching about the American pres. on foreign soil. That's it.

Obviously you don't see what I am saying. I don't care who you are or what you're talking about. You amuse me greatly when you fail to realize that I'm mocking you. That's it.

Southern Democrats, Rubi, are hard to figure out. Maybe they're inrepublican? Logically, you'd think the ones I referred to would be conservative Reps, but the ones I know aren't:They love Jimmy Carter & Bill Clinton and yet are not classically liberal in their views. I have tried to get my born and bred southern friends to explain this to me, but I am still unable to tell the difference between a northern conservative and many southern Dems. Maybe DC can explain it to me some day.

Well, I'm Canadian and so probably beyond my depth, but I think that the Republicans have poached a great many of them, John.
For example, a lot of trailer folk are now Republican, ain't they?

Some are -- sort of. They vote Rep in national elections and Dem all the way in local. It probably goes way back to the days of the Byrd Machine.
