No, not really. I assumed you meant to say that the actual average penis is probably longer than 5.5" but that men like to believe it is 5.5" so that they can think, "Hah! My penis is bigger than average!"

The is a book called "Is Size Important?" that, among other things, looks at the various studies and tries to draw conclusions on average. Looking at the data, the author draw the conclusion that the average is somewhere between 5.5 and 6 inches. Looking at how he processes the data, I think this is a pretty reasonable range.

The book also has interesting conclusions on race, body size, correlations to other body parts, etc. If you are interested in the topic, it might be worth picking up.
