Before my time.
Love 'im love 'im love 'im... I saw him in concert just prior to the Purple Rain craze & just dug him. VERY talented songwriter. Saw the Purple Rain tour as well, the man has nads for coming out nekked in a bathtub! Though sadly I hear the last tour was very "Kingdom Hall evangelistic" rather than his old stuff, but I didn't see it.
** hums "Rasberry Baret**
weird guy, weird music, talented musician though. I really dont like his stuff, but I have to conceed that he has a significant amount of ability however wayward he displays it
Sorry pup, I was just feeling old. Love me??
Aw, you know I do.
Prince rules, I'm a devotee, but I fear he's 'jumped the shark'.
Yeah some of his new stuff is crazy. I bought the Diamonds And Pearls album yesterday, not too good lol. Some songs are good, but the rest I dun like. I have his best of too, thats a great album. My fave Prince songs are I Wanna Be Your Lover (in my sig), Cream, Thieves In The Temple, Diamonds And Pearls, When Doves Cry, Purple Rain and Kiss I heard he can play virtually any instrument talented guy and his songs are good for sex
Throw on "Legend" by Bob Marley & the Wailers too sometime...
Pick up a copy of 'Dirty Mind'.
Prince's funk stripped bare and raw. Too raunchy for radioplay in its time. A minimalist masterpiece.
While it took 'Purple Rain' to get him mainstream attention, 'Dirty Mind' served notice to the music industry that a new kid was in town. One that didn't play by the rules.
One of my all-time Top 5. If I had to take one to a desert island, that might be it.
For Prince, Around the World in a Day, Parade, Sign of the Times, Lovesexy, Diamonds & Pearls ... and Purple Rain of course!
He changed the game.
Prince definitely has the happiest-looking drummer in the business.
I thought his music was pretty good being a child of the 80s. I haven't really listened to much of his newer stuff since he changed his name. On a side note though, he always had smoking hot women in his band!
I guess I'm alone here, but I found him musically boring and his chosen topics for songs were trite and overdone. If not for the "hot chicks in spandex" there would have been no point at all. I do realise that he can play several instruments, and I can appreciate that on the same level as someone who is multi-lingual, but if all he produces are songs that leave me feeling "so what?" then it seems like a waste of ability.*
*please remove the words "cream" "suck" "grind" "pump" and "ass" from his songs and tell me if they are valuable as literature or just wank material.
Yeah a lot of it is about girls and sex (probably all of it) but some of the songs are good for that
I spose its different being a guy, I think girls tend to like female artists and topics, and guys like the opposite?
Prince is a very talented songwriter too, and musician.
I really like some of his earlier stuff. The joke several years ago was:
The Artist Formerly Known As Good
I agree. Prince and his music really didn't appeal to me but I'll grant that he was a talented musician as well as being prolific and original.
I'd have to pinpoint "Rave Un 2 The Joy Fantastic" as the moment where he really jumped the shark for me. I love what he did before then.
Now that he's changed his name back, do we call him The Artist Formerly Known As The Artist Formerly Known As Prince?
