I think that as a person he is a freak but I love his older music. My favorite lyrics by him are:

I promised myself not to come until she does
And she took both hands and a liar I was

~I love U in me

Nothin about you is false
That's why your love is real
God forbid if you belonged to another I'd have to steal you
Take you from your bed, I might be tempted to break the law
But I don't care
Because, your beauty gives one pause, it slows me down

I just can't stop writin songs about you
I love you so much
I just can't wait to get my arms around you and feel your touch
If I don't see you real soon baby girl I might go insane
I know its only been three hours but I love it when you call my name

Prince - Call My Name

I like that song, cool lyrics, like most of Prince's songs. Does anyone know any good albums? I was thinking of getting Musicology (the album that song's from).

I was at a music venue in Toronto a few years back (NXNE) and a shit kickin' thrash punk country band from Boston or New England was closing a bar called Ted's Wrecking Yard with an encore for the loud and appreciative crowd.

The young band leader introduced their encore and it went like this:

"We'd all like to do a FOLK SONG FROM MINNESOTA for you...it's written by singer song writer I'm sure you ALL know....and it sorta goes like this....

....TWO THREE FOUR....

(INTRO – Waylon Jennings-style DEEP AND SLOW COUNTRY TWANG)

" I never meant to cause you any sorrow
I never meant to cause you any pain
I only wanted to one time see you laughing
I only wanted to see you laughing in the purple rain

Purple rain Purple rain...."

Fuckers nailed it perfectly. It worked.
Not a dry eye in the place. We were all laughing so hard.

Oh wow, Prince has a huge place in my heart! Yeah, he's lost his touch for trendsetting, gone nutty with the religion thing, and is probably too isolated in a rich-man's life to make relevant, hungry music anymore, but he's done more jaw-droppingly incredible work over the years than most anyone else, so he has my undying love and respect for that alone (even if recent albums are pale shadows of his former greatness).

His songs aren't all about sex (though I daresay few do that type of thing better) though it might seem that way to the casual listener who only heard the radio tracks. He really has put together some breathtakingly raw and emotional stuff over the years.

"Sign O' the Times" is a hybrid masterpiece--hands down his best work, in my opinion, and, as a double album (anyone under thirty-five even know what that used to mean  ), it has room to delve into diverse territories with a great set of songs. "If I Was Your Girlfriend" was years before its time, musically and especially lyrically.

(I agree, TAG, about "I Love U In Me." Great lyrics. Had an embarrassing experience involving that song last summer: pulling a late night on campus and thought I was the only one left in the building, so I was doing paperwork and singing along with the music I was playing, and yeah, the rest of the story kinda tells itself. )

The cool-to-crap ratio has gotten pretty slim over the past few years, but there are at least a few real gems on every one of his albums. When it's bad, it's disappointing, but when it's good, it's freakin' incredible.

And, really, if you see him live, all is forgiven.

"Sign O' The Times" is probably the pinnacle.
if i was your one and only friend, would you run to me if somebody hurt you, even if that somebody was me...

Hey, Steve, if you ever get the chance, check out "Billboards". It's an evening length ballet set to Prince music, danced by the Joffrey Ballet.
The duet to "The Question Of U" is the hottest bit of choreography that doesn't involve a stripper pole that you will EVER see in your adult life.

Paul, it makes me happy that you like the artist once again known as Prince. Although he wears higher heels than most of his women, I love the fact that he's created his own world and invited us to watch...

All of my purple life
I’ve been looking for a dame
That would wanna be my wife
That was my intention, babe

If we cannot make babies, maybe we can make some time
Thoughts of pretty u and me, erotic city come alive
We can funk until the dawn, making love ’til cherry’s gone
Erotic city can’t u see, thoughts of pretty u and me

Everytime I comb my hair
Thoughts of u get in my eyes
U’re a sinner, I don’t care
I just want your creamy thighs

Paul,

Though I may not have been a fan the song you graciously shared the other evening, there are some undeniably brilliant Prince classics. As for the high heels he is an exquisite bird of Paradise, the heels only add to the effect.

"I got a lion in my pocket & baby it's ready to roar" - ok, c'mon... if ya can't get laid with THAT playin she must be Mormon...

and don't even get me started reminiscing over "Little Red Corvet - baby you're much too fast..."

I loved him in the pre-Ppl Rain era with the Farah Faucet feathered hair...

***smears on a half gallon of Oil of Olay, feeling the saucy thoughts of yesteryear... tries to feather what's left of hair"

I just feel the need to set this straight since I've seen at least 2 people get it wrong:

He is no longer known as the Artist Formally Known as Prince. He changed his name back. He is Prince. Type it, use it....it's shorter.

He really kind of freaks me out......

He's up there with Michael Jackson on the creepy scale.
