I feel like the prevalence to porn and easy access to anything that you want to see has changed everything. No matter what your interest, male-female or male male, many of us inevitably gravitate towards the most attractive cock as we either fantasize to be that guy or see ourselves there. The cross section of erect cocks that we see in videos is not a representative sample so I think this generation feels inadequate. Not making an excuse for this generation just understanding that they are bombarded with images that I only saw in Penthouse once in a blue moon when I bought one at that age. Big swinging cocks are everywhere on the net and we all know based on our experience in the average gym locker room that is just not anywhere near reality.

That’s true to a degree but gym locker rooms were always the exception to that. The shy towel dances began about 15 years ago. I don’t know what men made this transition to modesty.
As has been stated elsewhere, a big part of the change is the advent cell phones and increased publicity of predators. Such men are a blight on society in terms of their victims. One side effect, however, has been that y guys think every man in a locker room is a predator, and that's why they towel dance.

This looks contrived to me, but surely this is the norm, even with swimmers. Or do they now keep their suits on until they're back at their locker. What has turned men so timid?

Yes, exactly. They shower with their swimsuits on, and only take them off in the locker room, using the towel dance. I've seen it many times, so this video was quite refreshing.

Towel dances should be outlawed by an act of Congress.

I was at the gym today in the sauna by myself. It's very small. I had a towel that I was sitting on and nothing else wrapped around me cuz I was solo and then this guy walked in..... and I said oh excuse me as my foot was hanging out in the aisle a bit and I said I'm sorry, and I covered myself up...... then I was like what the fuck am I apologizing for, I was not in his way and I don't need to cover up so off came the towel again..... there is no such thing as a gym where everybody is 100% comfortable naked all the time but I can only imagine how satisfying that would be and how much brotherhood there would be in that room, sexual titillation aside. Just acceptance.

I've seen my fair share of towel dances but around here, nude has always been the norm it seems. What I see around here, which confuses me to no end, is that guys will use the shower and sauna nude and talk casually, wrap a towel around their waist for a 20ft walk to their locker, then be casually nude again while they dry and get dressed at the lockers.

A few weeks ago I was showering after a good swim, naked, of course. Unfortunately, I've got to say that I was the only one. A few guys came in before their swim, which I understand why they don't strip off. However, probably 5 guys came in to shower after their swim, and all of them kept heir swimming suits on.
I thought that if there's at least one guy naked in their, they would follow suit. Nope...

All in all, I most likely saw 10 guys, old and young, and none of them showered naked

Maybe if we had a swim buddy and both of us showered naked, more people would join in? Any experiences with that?

Maybe, just maybe, it's because they know that there are guys like you out there hoping to catch a peek at their junk.

Or, someone else hanging around trying to capture "candid" shots of naked guys in the showers and lockerroom.

Given the sheer number of such photos to be found on the Internet - thousands of them just at this site alone - is it any wonder that lots of guys choose to not strip off?

At my New York City gym, there’s a variety of lockerroom types; most of the guys get naked at their lockers, wrap a towel around their waist, then steam and shower. I have seen a few towel dances but not too often.
A few months ago in early 2022, I went to one of the downtown locations of my gym; standing at the urinal, fully nude, was a very handsome young man, very all American, in his mid-20s taking a piss. No towel in sight. While fully unencumbered nudity is uncommon at this gym, you may occasionally see a guy walking fully nude from his locker to pick up a towel near the shower area. So, this beautiful, perfectly built guy finishes peeing, walks to his locker completely naked and then lingers nude in front of his locker while slowly starting to dress. I followed him from the urinal to the lockers, took a locker near his and also started to undress. I caught his eye, we swapped smiles and compared boners for a while until he left and I went upstairs to workout. I have been hoping to run into him again but have not as of yet.

After gyms reopened 'post-Covid', and I purchased a membership allowing me to go to multiple gyms, I started alternating gyms -- depending on the workout I wanted. At the new gym, I was almost dumbfounded to see an attractive, fit guy in his 30s walk to the showers old school style -- carrying towel in front of him instead of wrapping it around his waist. No one wanted to wrap a clean towel around a sweaty body before they showered! Admittedly, I usually walk to showers in boxer briefs and take them off just before entering showers ( some guys will get in the showers and close the curtain first).

After a week or two, I saw a stocky daddy (my preference) come into the LR just as I was about to leave. About a week later, he exited the showers as I was dressing. I don't know if he did this because I was there (new guy) or if it was normal behavior, but he actually pulled up both his underwear and pants while still wearing a towel. You don't see many guys over 40 doing that, and I was a bit taken back. The next time I saw him, he was in a different section of the LR, and I assumed he did the same. So imagine my surprise when one day he was in the LR just before I arrived and stripped bareass naked -- and walked to the showers carrying his towel! He did, however pull up his briefs (not pants) under his towel. I once attempt to do that, and almost fell over the bench. Getting underwear over my damp feet is difficult enough without adding a towel dance to the mix. After our showers, I was in the same section as the stocky daddy -- and he may have glanced my way when I was fully naked -- possibly to see if I was aroused? In my entire life, there have only been a two occasions when I was getting aroused and had to hide it, but this wasn't one of them. I don't know why, but for whatever reason, the next time he came from the showers -- he dropped the towel before dressing -- and was facing me -- giving me the rare full frontal view!

About a month after this happened, there were some new guys in our section, and he walked to the showers with the towel around his waist. These new guys are all towel dancers -- so that have had something to do with it.

As a guy in my 20s and not as well-endowed as you guys, I'm definitely not modest. I'll admit I enjoy seeing what everyone else is packing and its very interesting seeing the size differences.
Creds to you! Confidence is key. And for all they know you might be way bigger than the showers when you're erect. Doing the towel dance just gives an impression that you have a small dick that you're embarrassed of showing. So don't get why that's a better option than just changing normally no matter the size of your tool. Big dick energy on an average equipped man is pretty hot if you ask me...

It's been documented elsewhere, but in the US, in the 50's and 60's, all nude male YMCA's were the rule. Previous to that boys growing up on farms, etc, had no privacy, due to small houses and all the kids sharing rooms. Nudity was normal. After families started making more money, separate bedrooms because possible for each child, so a boy never had a reason to be naked in front of others. Nudity was NOT the norm any longer. But guys still got naked showering after gym class and after sports activities so they reluctantly got through those experiences, but nowhere else. As time went on, boys and parents complained so much that some of these went away too. So when young men 15 years ago or so and more recently, go to a gym, they don't want to be naked in front of others. It has nothing to do with fear of being filmed. They're just uncomfortable showing their bodies to others. There are exceptions, of course, but this is why modesty has increased so much in the last 30 years. Back when some schools had swimming pools, filter designs were so bad that boys' swimsuits, which were a kind of felt, clogged them up so badly, that nude swimming was required. Wasn't that big a deal. Swim meets were even held naked with girls and women in the stands. Can you imagine this now?

I do believe that people using their phones in the locker room and potentially could be taking pictures or film is a factor why so many men do the towel dance and don't dare to get nude in the locker room, but to be honest I think the biggest factor is that men are uncomfortable letting other men see what they're working with because they believe they're on the smaller side and that other men are much bigger than them.

Truth is most men are average, neither super small or super big. There's a reason why it's called AVERAGE, but because men are seeing big dicks all over the internet on a daily, average isn't perceived as good enough for some weird reason. And the reason why we see all these big willies online is obviously because hung men are more likely to post pictures of their dicks online cos they're proud of the size of it, which creates an image of most men being well endowed.

I hope more men dare to skip the towel dance and get changed + shower naked cos then men see that we all work with different sizes, but that the majority of men don't carry an eggplant between their legs like you often see online.

It might be easy for me to say since I´m lucky enough to be on the larger side, so I´ve never been worried about other men seeing me naked

I'm currently writing an upcoming blog entry on exactly this topic. Titling it "Naked and Afraid."

Personally, I'm not at all bashful, and even a bit on the exhibitionist side, but - to me - the saddest part of the modern modesty *is* that it appears to be driven by fear: fear of not measuring up; fear of being leered at; and definitely the fear of ending up as a video on the internet (which is a huge invasion of privacy if not assault).

I'm fortunate for having experienced locker room nudity as a young man (and later, of course) because at some point it became clear that being naked with other guys is a comfortable thing to do and allows for deeper bonding between us. Nothing sexual about it unless someone's creeping. My best (male) friend and I have a very deep relationship that includes a long history of being nude around each other. Our wives think we're crazy, but it definitely has brought us very close together.

Honestly, I think that young men these days - God, I sound like an old fart - are missing out on something that definitely helped socializing and bonding between men of my and previous generations. We all went through the awkward years, but for the vast majority it helped us mature and move on.

My two cents, which'll buy you 2/450ths a cup of coffee at Starbuck's.

[...]

I would settle for far less than that. ;)

How about no bonding and no socializing, but perhaps chilling out just a bit over the 5 seconds of nudity required for a reasonably fit guy to:

1. Drop the towel on the floor after the mandatory before-work shower (1 second)
2. Dry off feet on said towel while also allow some air to eliminate fungus-enticing moisture between the legs (3 seconds)
3. Acquire clean, uncontroversial underwear (1 second)

I also take exception to characterizations of this backward, awkward and rather pathetic behavior as "bashful", "modest", "puritan", etc.

There is nothing remotely "modest" about our pathologically self-absorbed society. See "Last Instagram Moments" featuring some not-so-modest cretin trying to score a great selfie inches away from a precipice, nanoseconds before experiencing the gravity of gravity.

At most of the club locations I frequent, sights of average-looking dweebs posing for 10 minutes shirtless in front of the mirror to curate their social media profiles abound...

They might "shower" beforehand, by sponging off their sweat with the cheap recycled paper towels from the dispenser...

As for all the self-flagellation about the "puritanical roots" of America, I can only say: WTF?

So guys 10 or 20 years ago in the same America with radically different lockerroom behavior don't share the same "puritanical roots" as guys in 2022 AD?
