That's true, best is subjective. I think McCartney is overrated, no hits since the 80's, but the Beatles I think are not.
Which one is better is something I'd never decide. The UK had nothing to match the US in the '50s,but once The Beatles made it I think UK musicians have generally been more open to experimentation (as was UK radio thanks to John Peel).American artists know that they'll get a fair hearing when they come here without doing the years of touring that it takes in the states.Jimi Hendrix was the first one to discover that.We ( the U.S.) started rock n roll. We started punk. We started new wave.
But they made it better.
Rock n roll- The Beatles and Led Zeppelin
Punk- The Sex Pistols & the Clash
(and the U.K. gave us the punk look)
New Wave- The Smith and The Cure
ok...here I go again creating contoversy and debate . Get your flame throwers ready.
If you're talking classical music, Henry Purcell is one of the all-time g8s.
Up with Bach and Mozart.
(FWIW, he influenced Pete Townshend.)
I don't care for British music. Most of the artists I give my attention to are American. I have no doubt, however, the best pop music is crafted in Sweden.
Made me go and put on Music for the Funeral of Queen Mary.
(finally finished building a CD shelf, it's been years since I could find anything)
Abba had many great hits and songs, Ace of Base were terrible in my opinion, other than that I think the U.S. has the best pop music.
My Ipod is probably 90 British music. I don't even know any bands or music from the other coutries you mentioned besides the USA. Except for Bjork/The Sugarcubes from Iceland, and a few bands from Australia.
.
Good stuff, kal.![]()
I may be on my own here, but if you want the best pop and RnB music you need look any further than japan. MSG me if you want a few examples.
Rap, grunge, house whatever, modern noise - US and you're welcome to it.
Pop - UK because of the Beatles but ABBA give them a run. Michael Jackson? You know...the king of pop.
Country - US
Soul - US (personally Van Morrison wins it for Ireland) Van morrison's okay if you're afraid of the southern states or something.
Blues - US, though Clapton is worthy of a mention Clapton's worthy of more than a 'mention'. what about the zepp? jeff beck? US still wins.
Punk - UK, Ramones et al were pussies by comparison punk is gay
Rock n Roll - The King for the US, who else? Chuck Berry, Roy Orbison, Buddy Holly.
Rock - UK like...who? I'll give you the stones. the rest is ours.
Ballad - US
Military Band - UK
Classical - UK
Big Band - don't know, probably the US
Barber Shop - US
Church - US
With the exception of the early and traditional blues, US music was just too sanitised which is why I think the UK produced the better music through the 60's, 70's and 80's.
