We ( the U.S.) started rock n roll. We started punk. We started new wave.

But they made it better.

Rock n roll- The Beatles and Led Zeppelin

Punk- The Sex Pistols & the Clash

(and the U.K. gave us the punk look)

New Wave- The Smith and The Cure
ok...here I go again creating contoversy and debate . Get your flame throwers ready.
Which one is better is something I'd never decide. The UK had nothing to match the US in the '50s,but once The Beatles made it I think UK musicians have generally been more open to experimentation (as was UK radio thanks to John Peel).American artists know that they'll get a fair hearing when they come here without doing the years of touring that it takes in the states.Jimi Hendrix was the first one to discover that.
I have enjoyed such bands as The Velvet Underground and The Strokes as much as British acts and I don't think anyone here has taken their style and improved on it.
The US didn't match UK punk because most US acts don't like to talk politics.Too worried about their sales being affected.

The best music ever comes from wherever there are young people who want something more than the ordinary out of life. That's my opinion and it is better than everyone elses.

I don't care for British music. Most of the artists I give my attention to are American. I have no doubt, however, the best pop music is crafted in Sweden.

If you're talking classical music, Henry Purcell is one of the all-time g8s.
Up with Bach and Mozart.
(FWIW, he influenced Pete Townshend.)

Made me go and put on Music for the Funeral of Queen Mary.

(finally finished building a CD shelf, it's been years since I could find anything:rolleyes:)

Abba had many great hits and songs, Ace of Base were terrible in my opinion, other than that I think the U.S. has the best pop music.

A lot of American artists I play are the output of Swedish studios.

I also think they make brilliant lyrics for us to sing.

My Ipod is probably 90 British music. I don't even know any bands or music from the other coutries you mentioned besides the USA. Except for Bjork/The Sugarcubes from Iceland, and a few bands from Australia.
.

To quote myself. I forgot to mention a band that I love that was from Canada. It is an Industrial band called Skinny Puppy. My signature in green has lyrics form one of their songs. (until I change it)

I like music from everywhere!

I do seem to have a special fondness for "Britpop" but I really like American "jangle pop" as well.

One of my current favorite bands, the Hidden Cameras, is from Canada. One of my other current favorites, the Shins, are from the US.

And I also like Congolese soukous and Tuvan throat singing!

...and much, much more...

I may be on my own here, but if you want the best pop and RnB music you need look any further than japan. MSG me if you want a few examples.

Not familiar with Japanese R&B, but I have heard Shonen Knife, Cibbo Matto, and some others. Not sure of all their names. A local college radio station here has a program of Japanese rock every Saturday night. Good stuff...

I really like Shonen Knife, too.

Rap, grunge, house whatever, modern noise - US and you're welcome to it.

Pop - UK because of the Beatles but ABBA give them a run

Country - US

Soul - US (personally Van Morrison wins it for Ireland)

Blues - US, though Clapton is worthy of a mention

Punk - UK, Ramones et al were pussies by comparison

Rock n Roll - The King for the US, who else?

Rock - UK

Ballad - US

Military Band - UK

Classical - UK

Big Band - don't know, probably the US

Barber Shop - US

Church - US

With the exception of the early and traditional blues, US music was just too sanitised which is why I think the UK produced the better music through the 60's, 70's and 80's.

Pop - UK because of the Beatles but ABBA give them a run. Michael Jackson? You know...the king of pop.
Country - US

Soul - US (personally Van Morrison wins it for Ireland) Van morrison's okay if you're afraid of the southern states or something.

Blues - US, though Clapton is worthy of a mention Clapton's worthy of more than a 'mention'. what about the zepp? jeff beck? US still wins.

Punk - UK, Ramones et al were pussies by comparison punk is gay

Rock n Roll - The King for the US, who else? Chuck Berry, Roy Orbison, Buddy Holly.

Rock - UK like...who? I'll give you the stones. the rest is ours.

Ballad - US

Military Band - UK

Classical - UK

While elvis, the beatles, and all of those other lame animal names were flooding the airwaves of radio there were other things happening. There was funk, for starters. The blues shaped what we listen to today, and during those 3 decades it was certainly making it's way around the genre board. I can't imagine there ever being a jimmy paige without muddywaters. get it?

It really doesn't matter where punk 'came' from, and I don't think I'd be proud of that mindless music.
