I do agree that the punishment is ridiculous (hell, there shouldn't even be any punishment at all), and that Mohammed would probably feel honored and flattered that children thought well of him.

But... that's imposing our ideas of what Mohammed "should" do. I don't mind Muslims deciding to feel offended, but I do mind how they take their offended feelings and turn to violence.

my bad then. i though it was on bbc 5live but obviously not. i didn't intend to start a world war or anything. i'm relieved that she's off the hook though. rediculous situation still.
She's not "off the hook" yet, she's still in prison.Diplomats are still trying to free her.I think any diplomatic skills I may have would evaporate pretty quickly if I had to deal with these people.

We had Muslim men, women and children calling for the extermination of all non-muslims outside the Danish Embassy in London, I walked right past it that day.

I know this wasn't meant to be a religion bashing thread but it is about time Islam was called to book, Muslims demand tolerance for their religion yet give no tolerance or understanding to other cultures and religions, in the UK if it were Christians demanding extermination of all non-Christians they'd be hauled up in court.

I hear people saying Mohammed would tolerate this and that, and that the Qu'ran is a book of peace - has anyone read the Qu'ran, it contains such gems as 'a woman is only worth half of a man'.

That is really one of the most ridiculous things i ever heard. That is one of the reasons i never follow any religions. It make some followers ( the fanatical ones ) do some crazy things .

The Koran contradicts itselfs so much like the bible. In some verses in the Koran talk about tolerance , peace , brotherhood ect with all people. In another verses damn the non believers( nonmuslims) .( basically a hate message).

Wow. That's off the wall. Why don't they just arrest the kids while they're at it?

Don't give them any ideas. They will get around to it. They follow the same laws as those wonderful folks who send rape victims to prison because they are "asking for it."

What about all those parents who name their kids Muhammed? Aren't they being blasphemous then? Arrest them. In fact, since naming teddy bears and drawing cartoons are insulting and blasphemous, according to them, why not just outlaw even saying the name? Hmmmm.

I am sure this thread is already considered an insult by someone. Maybe a mob can burn a computer in protest.

Systems which attempt to control the minutiae of life and rule by terror are totalitarian regimes. That is the system in place that we are seeing here.

So much for cultural understanding. A British Primary school teacher has been jailed in Sudan for asking her class of 7 year olds to name a bear. The class of children chose the name Mohammed. Now the teacher is in jail on charges of ridiculing the prophet Mohammed. She could be publicly beaten and/or serve up to a year in jail. At least the parents are coming to her aid and support.

Once again the idiocy of some misguided people.

Time Magazine: The Blasphemous Teddy Bear

Maybe I should have been clearer, but all Muslims are not misguided. Quite the contrary. Most Muslims I have encountered and know are very peacable and kind. They also are not even remotely bent toward violence. My intent was to say that in every sector, there are a "pious" few who think it is their right to punish people for the most ridiculous of reasons.

And that could be taken as you refering to ALL Muslims as well. We all make the common mistake.

My view on how Mohammed might feel comes from what I have learned about the faith from other Muslims not a view that I am imposing on someone.

Hmm, why does this thread keep reminding me of the thread about the "blasphemous depiction of Da Vinci's 'The Last Supper'?"

Maybe they could claim it's a typo, and the bear is really named after Mohammed II. He was the Ottoman sultan who overran Constantinople and destroyed the last vestiges of the Byzantine Empire. (You know, "Religion of Peace," and all.) Unlike the earlier Mohammed, modern believers don't seem to give much of a hoot about Mohammed II.

In any case, look on the bright side - progressives can rejoice at this display of multiculturism at work.

At first I thought that this thread was about a Teddy Bear version of Childsplay's Chuckie::rolleyes:

Child's Play (1988) - Posters

Gillian Gibbons didn't blaspheme and note nothing has been done to the children who actually named the bear. It appears that radical clerics don't want a non moslem teaching children of their faith hence they have pushed for this ridiculous, unwarranted persecution.

Wow...blasphemy charges all due to a poor innocent Teddy Bear! I think I've just about heard everything now. This type of persecution goes on all over in Africa and other countries where poverty and corrupt government rule...we just don't hear about in the mainstream media. But using a Teddy Bear and some children as an excuse to carry out their unjustified persecution is sooooo cowardly...

And the first prize goes (finally) to Dreamer.

I just heard she's been charged. Now of course, the Sudanese Government can extort some cash and concessions behinds the scenes to err, grease the wheels of diplomacy.

Then, a short while, and possibly a show trial later, it can release her 'for being guilty of an innocent mistake and to show 'the compassion of Islam'. Alternatively the clerics may have more control and she will face the lash. My money is on the former.

Either way I expect she'll be conveniently deported. I bet she wishes she'd been teaching in say, Juba.

I don't know if this has been said yet but:

"You call your son Mohammed and its a sign of respect and encouraged."

"You call your teddybear Mohammed and its hateful and sacreligious."

Or is it because its a white woman? (Had to ask).

Are there no Muslim girls/boys in Sudan who have teddies and toys called Mohammed?

I love the freedom to say I don't give a fuck about Mohammed or Islam. Sudan's country is fucked up right there.

Yup. This whole situation is just pathetic. If some arab came to England and called a teddy Jesus, nobody would care! We might think them a little weird, but apart from that, no-one would give a shit.
They really need to chill out! Its only a name?!
