I always thought they tried to make it into a movie.. THE POSTMAN..(?). (Kevin Costner)but failed miserably. I never confirmed wether it was actually based on that book. It was the most awsome end-of -the-world novel I have ever read.

I'm not sure if The Postman was based on that novel or not.
There is another , slightly more SF related novel called Footfall.
The same idea, only the Earth is hit by an asteroid that was
intentionally sent to earth by aliens that look like miniature
elephants. But I can't remember who wrote it.
