I'm still waiting for the first joint UK/French military action, when I'm sure all the French fighter jets will launch from the UK carriers, turn round, & sink the fleet, shouting "remember Mers-El-Kebir"!
We beat the French at Waterloo in 1815 but have fought with them ever since! Maybe after two centuries we can accept we've set a pattern!
More to the point both Cameron and Sarkozy have set in place something which transcends the EU. It is as if these two (and other leaders throughout the EU) have accepted that the EU emperor is in his birthday suit and are actively planning for the future. The alliance makes no sense whatsoever within the context of an EU defence alliance. Rather with it the two strongest military powers in Europe have decided that they will act together - which makes the EU irrelevant for defence (after the UK and France there is hardly any significant defence expenditure within the EU nations). And yes it does cause friction with the USA - the combined Anglo-French military expenditure is the world's second largest (after the USA and before China) and not in the pocket of the USA, which the USA won't like. Remember Cameron signed up for it shortly after visiting Afghanistan and Iraq and seeing at first hand the problems of these USA-led catastrophes - this is realigning the UK away from being the poodle of the USA.
Vive le Royaume Uni! Long Live France! :biggrin1:
