Domestic or worldwide?

It is going to come damn close to 500 domestic alone...worldwide it could even crack 1 billion.

well, don't forget Titanic came out when ticket prices were around $4.59...now they are $7.08-7.14 roughly.

so ticket prices are about 55% higher...so it would have to wrangle up 930 million domestic to equal Titanic in terms of tickets sold.

It's going to break Titanic's mark!

nope. highly unlikely...even if it did, it wouldn't really be breaking Titanic, since as i said above, ticket prices are 55% higher.

The best way to look for comparison is in tickets sold, since it is the most accurate.

Titanic sold nearly 131 million tickets in the USA. An obscene amount

Yes,
but remember that hero movies are short term at theaters... look at The Hulk , it is already out from most theaters and it not even 2 months of release.
While Titanic went for a long run 6-8 months I don't remember.

Yea, but at this pace it will reach 500 million in 1 month. :) or faster!

Dear, that's not how it works. Titanic broke the records of other films whose ticket prices were less than they were during that time.

The fact that ticket prices are higher, means that Dark Knight was still able to pack more audiences in theaters than a film which cost less to see. That makes it even more astounding. The economy is in the toilet, but people still went out and spent big bucks to see the film.

BTW, I paid $6 to see Titanic!

sorry dear...Titanic broke those records...but not when properly accounted for inflation.

In terms of true impact, ticket sales is the biggest thing. Box Office means less when you do not account for inflation.

Properly adjusted for inflation, Titanic comes in 6th behind
Gone With The Wind
Star Wars
Sound Of Music
ET
10 Commandments
and just barely edged out Jaws. 908 mill to 906 million

not to mention the population of the domestic box office (US and Canada) was 300 million people roughly in 1997.

When Jaws came out, (1975) the population was 240 million total.

All of these sold significantly more tickets than Titanic to a significantly smaller box office population.

selling 131 million tickets out of 240 million people (Jaws) is more impressive than selling 131 million tickets out of 300 million people. (Titanic)

Keep in mind that Gone With The Wind Made all that money when ticket prices were only 25 cents per ticket.

exactly!!!

not to mention a much smaller population...only 131 million americans.

Also nowhere near as many theaters.

Gone with the Wind sold roughly 202 million tickets!!!!

Virtually everyone in the nation saw it and many saw it repeatedly...It was even bigger in its time than Titanic.

yea, I guess.
Inflation is the answer, but either way Titanic is in the records so will be dark Knight. And 10 years from now, many will top that record again and again!

It's getting closer! ! The record might fall?

I went for the third time this past weekend. But yet again I am a fan. Luckily I had already purchased my tickets because all shows were sold out. Some people I spoke with were just seeing it for the first time.

Well have to wait & see if the record falls.
