I took my 14 year old neighbor to buy all of his sports equipment for Basketball. He made the team this year. His mother is a single mother and asked me as a favor. We got the sneakers, socks, tanks, armbands and I picked up two jock straps. He said he didn't want to wear one. I said it is on the list from your coach and he may check to make sure you are protecting your body.
The kid said he didn't want his bare ass shown in the locker room. So he bought a few pairs of compression shorts. I said to him I don't think they give the same protection as a jockstrap for all of the running, jumping he will be doing. Plus don't you shower after a game anyway? The kid said kids don't like wearing jock straps because all of your junk is so visible and who wants to show off their crack? I replied that the design is for maximum protection not for showing off or hiding anything.
He was very open about it and asked if I wore one for wrestling. I said no but the sports are very different. I mentioned that my friend is a football coach and checks for straps and cups.
He got both the staps and the shorts. I told him to try it on and play in the driveway or something. He may notice the difference and feel differently. His mother asaked if we got everything I said yes.
I was in my high school's football locker room and saw plenty of jock straps so I'm not sure where this kid is coming from. Maybe sports are different. Maybe it is the age or the fact that he doesn;t have a dad to talk to about these things.
I just don't want the kid to get hurt in the nuts.

I know of at least two places in the US where "STRAPS" are still very popular. One is the racketball club where I play here in Chicago and the other is in one of the private racketball clubs in NYC. Last year I was invited to play a game while visiting my cousin who is a member of a club in the Wall Street area and when we went to the locker room the attendant gave us a complete uniform INCLUDING A "STRAP". It was kewl to see so many 'strapped dudes' in the LR.

I'm a serious 'STRAP HOUND' and have worn a 'SWIMMER STRAP' as my undies since I was in college like eight years ago. STRAPS ROCK BIG TIME:biggrin1::biggrin1::biggrin1::biggrin1:!!

A student mentoned to me why he never wears jock staps. He said a lot of boys fear that the staps won't stay under their ass cheeks because they dont have enough muscle in their ass yet. He said it would be embarrassing to not be able to wear it correctly or have to adjust it constantly. I never thought of that since I always had a bit of a bubble butt all my life. But I can see how that could be a worry for a teen. I suggested a full back jock or compression shorts for practice. Students bought both and a few got the jock stap anyway.
I just wish boys were not so self conscious about their bodies. I was a bit self conscious in my teens (more about fear of the unexpected boner). Some of these boys hate their flesh being shown and just want to mask their muscles and butts. I just want them to feel free in the locker room.

I like the look and feel of a great fitting jock strap. It is true I do feel very masculine wearing one and walk proudly around the locker room (or bedroom) in my jock. I prefer the leg straps to the thong back or full back. After sports, when I take my jock off at my locker, it looks so dirty and smells of pure balls. Smells up my whole gym bag.

PS They were invented in England for delivery boys on "bikes" if memory serves.

My first jock was for rec basketball. My older bro was one of the high school guys coaching. He told me I needed to wear one and my dad took me and bought my brother and me new ones. It was a Bauer Black we bought at the drug store. I was in 5th grade and it turns out the only guy wearing a strap. I got kidded from the other guys but I just shrugged it off. My elementary school principal had a basketball practice class for 5th and 6th graders. Jocks were not required but reccommended. It was also the first time I showered at school. The guys restroom had two shower stalls and about half of the guys showered after we practiced.

In 7th grade we had a PE uniform. Red cotton canvas shorts with a built in jock and a white t-shirt. They were required for class. I guess we never had jock checks because they were in the shorts. They were really comfortable and I wish I could still find them. They were Yale supportershorts. I was one of about 4 7th graders that showered after gym. The older guys seemed impressed that we were comfortable enough to shower.

High school jocks were not required but the shower was. If you didn't shower you didn't pass. Our coach didn't stay in the locker room and watch so I don't know how he knew if we showered or not. All of us did.

I still wear a jock every now and then but mostly sport briefs and boxer briefs which is what most guys I know wear. The majority though just wear their boxers. My personal trainer always wore boxers even though he told me wearing a jock was a good idea. I tried working out in boxers when I was working with him and I got used to it but it just didn't feel right. I guess I fell to peer pressure since he would sometimes shower after we worked out. He never said anything about when I stopped wearing the jock or when I went back to it. He just said he never wore one and didn't think he had enough junk to need the support.

I'll try again to complete post #88.

It is interesting how we remember our school jockstrap experiences since for many of us this occurred decades ago. Starting with the first day that we dressed out in 7th grade PE, we learned that roll call involved pulling a leg strap down below our shorts to show that we were properly attired. Some boys may have worn cups in 7th or 8th grade gym, but they were not required and I don't remember seeing any classmate wearing one.

9th grade was an entiely different story! We had a wannabe Marine Drill Sgt. as a teacher and he required jockstraps and cups be worn for every class. 9th grade PE was supposed to be a sports oriented course, but every class started with a lot of calisthentics and it wasn't unusual for a class to end with a timed mile run on the track, with everyone in agony because their cups were chafing their thighs. I don't think those old metal cups would have survived a trip thru the dishwasher. We had to take our gym clothes home for washing every weekend and I remember frequently having to use rubber cement to reattach the cup cushion.

I think jockstraps were required for High School PE and although most of the boys wore them, I don't think the coaches checked or even cared.

In college, PE was required freshman and sophmore year. We had to buy gym shoes, but at the start of every class we would stop by the equipment room and pick up a "towel roll" that contained freshly washed socks, shorts a jock and gym shirt. It the activity required a cup, we grabbed a second jock and cup out of equipment bins. We slid the cup between the two supporters. Some of the cups were the old metal ones and looked really shabby. If you got to class early enough you could get one of the newer black cups that were made of a plastic that I think they called bakelite.
After class as you headed to the shower you threw your "whites" into the laundry cart and tossed your cups back into the equipment bin. I doubt that any of the cups were ever washed.

Jake, as always, you are a good guy for helping this young boy. In my generation, jock straps were a sign of becoming a man. It was a rite of passage. I was a swimmer, but never could get into wearing them under Speedos, though many of my team mates did. But, as you said, it is a sport by sport decision. And I am finding it amazing that this younger generation has so many phobias and hangups about wearing them. I guess we were more secure about our masculinity and in being nude or in jocks with other men. I'm sure you will be a great male role model for this young man.

I think compression shorts are probably better than a jock strap. I hated wearing a jock, probably only wore it once. Compression shorts, they are no big deal. Just improvement in technology...

Seems to be a very US thing to wear a jockstrap for just about everything. I have never owned nor worn a jockstrap in my life. I know a few guys who have, mainly because they play cricket and need something to hold their cricket box in place.

Like Sam, I grew up in an era when athletes all wore jocks. I never did like them -- chafing caused jock itch. The young men I play sports with now all wear Underarmor, so I tried it. It is much more comfortable, IMO.
I never liked the feeling of wearing a jockstrap either. Mabye they make them different now. Mabye they are more comfortable:cool:

They do make them much more comfortable now. They have soft material pouches, softer than most briefs. They have nice full seats or tubular rubber leg straps. I hated wearing them when I was younger. They have made huge improvements and I like wearing them daily.

Yes, jockstraps are pretty much dead for basketball players, although I could tell that one of my college alma mater's players was wearing one the other night. My best friend is a high school basketball coach, and most of his players wear compression shorts of some sort.

Playing basketball in my day, we did wear jocks and even with cups, since we were expected to give it all on defense. The one time I didn't wear a jock and cup in a high school basketball game, I got kneed in the nads--it nearly killed me. I don't think many high school football players wear jocks, but many/most do in college. I don't think so many younger/high school baseball players wear jocks, either, since so many sliding shorts now have a cup pocket. I play on a competitive adult softball team now, and most guys wear sliding shorts and only a few wear a cup.

I was used to wearing a jock, since I'd had to have one since playing little league pitcher in elementary school. They were the "industry standard" until the mid-late 80's. Having a hairy ass, I'd say jocks are easier to deal with than tight sticky compression shorts or support briefs.

They have ... maybe 30 years ago they were much more common, but even then more usual in some sports, eg rugger, than in others.

Some lpsg type guys like me have to wear them all the time (not just for sport), but that's a different matter.

I wore a cup for 2 years of middle school football as most of the teamates did. That damn thing was uncomfortable as hell. If you got hit there, it still hurt like hell. I played for 2 more years in Hs and i didnt wear it there. Just because i didnt feel that it did much for me and just was a nuisance to ear. Football is probably where it is most helpful too.
