IRS stimulus check update: When to expect Biden's $1,400 stimulus checks could go out, arrive as part of $1.9 trillion stimulus bill | Fortune

Why not just send everyone $2000? They were literally promising this during the Georgia runoffs.

I understand that you're supposed to add this to the $600 we got recently to bump the amount up to $2000, but that just seems... pedantic. You said $2000, so do $2000. This should have been a political slam-dunk, but the Democrats just fucked it up.

I'm a very left-leaning person, but this is why I don't consider myself a Democrat.

I've criticized the Democrats for years over this kind of thing, and again... It comes back to citizens united.

The donors always in their ears. What We The People want doesn't matter because we don't fund political campaigns, and generally are uninformed/misinformed enough to keep voting for people who are corrupted by the system we allowed to happen while we weren't paying attention.

I vote democratic basically every time. As progressive and possible. But goddamnit if our side of the aisle doesn't have a problem with listening to the voters over their precious donors.

That's why I liked Bernie.

This is what you find to be outraged about? Really? : unamused:

C'mon man! January 6, 2021 dude. Focus.
Yeah I have a fellow liberal friend on FB who is falling all over himself to complain that Biden would be adding 1,400 to 600 to make 2,000 and "both sides" etc.

I guess the Dems are incompetent tho, I've heard zero Republicans complain about $1,400 but certain Dems just have to get up and derail a conversation about White Nationalists attacking our government to complain their check isn't high enough and "the Centrists"...

The fact is Democrats have always been more scrutinizing of our own than Republicans have EVER been of theirs. I mentioned this way back near the beginning of the On Being Civil to Incivility thread upon which I was set upon and taken to task for having said so.

Though holding our elected officials to scrutiny is how it's SUPPOSED to be. I just saw a clip last night, on Brian Williams' show (The 11th Hour) in which Obama said this very thing.

So fair game I think, long as it doesn't get too silly.

As for expecting an EXTRA 2 grand on top of the $600 when the whole debate from the GET was for a $2000 check?? Not too realistic, imo.

Your expectation for this matter to be a political slam-dunk was unrealistic. As with many bills passed by the House, the $2,000 checks request was blocked by Mitch McConnell - whose party has a Senate majority.

"McConnell blocks $2,000 stimulus checks, then ties them to unrelated Trump demands on tech and election"
McConnell blocks $2,000 stimulus checks, then ties them to unrelated Trump demands on tech and election

Even with the eventual 50-50 D & R Senate membership split, and the yet to be President Biden, bipartisan support is needed to get this measure to pass. Biden is hoping to get this support from McConnell.

Is your definition of competence the ability to get every member to vote alike? From your article:

While Democrats will control the House, Senate, and the White House, their power—and ability to pass bills—hangs by a thread. Democrats will soon control the 50-50 split Senate with Vice President–elect Kamala Harris’s tie-breaking vote. In order to pass legislation in the face of united Republican opposition, they’ll need every single Democratic vote, including that of moderates such as Sen. Joe Manchin of West Virginia. Manchin has already signaled he’s not enthusiastic about $2,000 checks and may pose a roadblock for Democrats as they move to pass the new legislation.

Indeed, economists at Bank of America note the balance of power in Congress may be what holds up the timing of the next stimulus bill. “We think many of the provisions are nonstarters for the Republican caucus (e.g., raising the minimum wage) and would fail to get the necessary support to reach the 60-vote supermajority threshold needed in the Senate,”
And you start a thread titled "The democrats are incompetent?" It's not "Biden's stimulus check". It really is Congress that has to pass it and Congress includes democrats and republicans.

IF the Democrats weren't always pulling this kind of shit for decades, then perhaps Trump wouldn't have happened.

No if the US wasn't racist as fuck. You keep trying to pin Trump's election on economic issues when all the data says otherwise. Trump hasn't done shit for his deplorables economically in the last 4 years and in every way possible America is worst off and yet 70+ million thinks he deserves another term. Not enough dead people? Not enough unemployment? Not enough loss of income?

So pretty much you are a republican who wants to pass as democrat, this is not the only time you publish this kind of things.

Racist as fuck yes. This country has always been and it's fucking disgusting.

However... Anecdotally, most of the non-voters I know don't vote because they don't see the point. They still don't have affordable healthcare, they still don't make enough money to pay the bills, they still live in areas which are infrastructurally falling apart and nothing is being done about it.. they still see billionaires getting tax cuts (not just from republicans, either) while they keep paying as they can barely keep the lights on... Non-voters got Trump elected. If Biden doesn't give them a reason to go vote for him again in 4 years do you think they're going to?

They feel like it doesn't matter. No matter who's in office, their lives don't get better. So they don't "waste their time" voting.

I always push them to the polls, as much as I can, but I'd be full of shit if I said I didn't see their perspective.

In my personal life, I'm one of the only people I know who actually participates in politics.

*Most* of my peers don't. And yes, I engage them. I ask why. What I just posted... Yeah. Some are just uninformed, most just feel neglected by the system, because they are.

You think Biden can undo America's problem? An old quote comes to mind "Every country has the government it deserves." If you want a government that listens to it's people and is accountable to its people you need an enlightened and engaged people. The vast majority are not up to the task.

George Carlin puts it very succinctly.

Carlin was right for the most part. He was wrong about not voting, though.
