The Deniers Have A Reckoning

In fact the leader of that party is doing everything in his power to put MORE carbon into the air.

WASHINGTON — The White House, blindsided by a pact between California and four automakers to oppose President Trump’s auto emissions rollbacks, has mounted an effort to prevent any more companies from joining the other side.

Toyota, Fiat Chrysler and General Motors were all summoned by a senior Trump adviser to a White House meeting last month where he pressed them to stand by the president’s own initiative, according to four people familiar with the talks.

But even as the White House was working to do this, it was losing ground. Yet another company, Mercedes-Benz, is preparing to join the four automakers already in the California agreement — Honda, Ford, Volkswagen and BMW — according to two people familiar with the German company’s plans.

Mr. Trump, described by three people as enraged by California’s deal, has demanded that his staff members step up the pace to complete his plan. His proposal, however, is directly at odds with the wishes of many automakers, which fear that the aggressive rollbacks will spark a legal battle between California and the federal government that could split the United States car market.

--

The administration’s efforts to weaken the Obama-era pollution rules could be rendered irrelevant if too many automakers join California before the Trump plan can be put into effect. That could imperil one of Mr. Trump’s most far-reaching rollbacks of climate-change policies.

When you do something completely insane and suicidal don't expect everyone to follow you off the cliff Mr. President.

Farmers in the heartland are crying a river over climate change and financial ruin however once election day arrives they give it a giant thumbs up by voting republican. A vote for a party that doesn't believe in it at all.

A climate reckoning in the heartland
I don't think the farmers overwhelmingly support the Trump. I think the rural vote comes more from small towns, white folks with an old moldy sofa sitting on their porch or in their yard. There's a term for it ... starts with white, ends in trash.

That's not what I've been reading. I wish I was wrong but once a Trump supporter always a Trump supporter until death do us part. It is a bit of a suicide pact actually :(

Farmers are hurting, but they still support Trump and his trade war — for now

Thumbs up to them! Too little too late. It will be the same for the tourist industry from Mexico, to the Caribbean to Florida and north as seaweed takes over.

The time for climate action was 15-20 years ago when the bell began ringing but the band played on. I for one believe we have shot way past the tipping point. It's all downhill from here.

Seaweed is taking over pristine Florida beaches even as
the legislature bans the word (really that will make it go away guys!!).

"We were shocked when we walked onto the beach, we had no idea, and it's just full of weeds,” Christy Ayers said. “We tried to go swimming in it and we were swimming in the weeds. Not fun at all."

Tourist beach towns call seaweed invasion a ‘crisis’

I live directly on the beach in Florida. There has always been seaweed. At times it's sparse and other times it's an awful nuisance. Usually when there's been weather that kicks it up it will wash up along the beach. I've watched this since I was a kid...

We had this situation last year.
A very long heat and over the year way to less rain.
Farmers feared financial ruin and demanded/asked for support. At the end the government has spend over 300 millions for compensations.
This year the minister for agriculture made clear that such a support can't become the norm and was an exception. Only a few weeks later rangers and forest owners talked about financial support. 1.5 years with too less rain and too much heat would harm the forest and lots of trees wouldn't make it. A new strategy for the forest is needed and this will need money as well...

So, we don't support farmers all the time, but every year another industry?

It's a little different now more severe thanks to climate change. For Mexico it’s been devastating.

The Seaweed Invasion
This year, tons of the seaweed have fouled white-sand beaches from Miami to the Mayan Riviera.

And thanks to Trump many more farmers are finished - the irony abounds. Overwhelmingly they voted for him, NOW their sorry. Yeah, a lot like the people who rushed to book a ticket on the Titanic - some choices have fatal consequences.

Trump has been funneling billions and billions to farmers for his trade war and I'm sure they'll be funneling billions more as climate change takes its toll on the land. Nevertheless there will be much suffering for the farmers.

The 77,744 votes from Wisconsin, Michigan and Pennsylvania were not likely farm voters. Much more probable that this lost voting block was more aligned with manufacturing jobs.

A more important thing to look at is whether those voters will support his reelection or not.

You see here is the thing

One of the hardest things for people to do is admit they are or were "wrong" about something or anything.

Con men such as Donald Trump play to this.

They know that their "marks" will either double down and throw good money after bad hoping for some kind of unforeseen miracle turnaround or more cynically that other suckers will come in so at least they, the first or second wave of marks can get out without loosing EVERYTHING and if not the marks will quietly slink off and say nothing rather than "admit to the world" that they got conned that they were stupid enough to get conned.

This is the vise that all those Trumpians are in. Admit they got conned by Don the con and/or try to explain/say just what was it that they were so dead certain that Hillary was no doubt going to do that they just could not live with and that makes getting conned "worth it "

At least ---- did not happen

Exactly. He bankrupted several of his own businesses and kept his tax returns(and losses) secret. Why would following him have a different outcome?

And scientists worst-case scenarios of years ago are coming to fruition and much sooner than even they expected. Fossil fuel and more importantly meat is our crack and we can't quit it.
