This is the first year in many years that I haven't gotten sick at all, not even a little bit of a cold, in spite of having sick people all around me.

I attribute my immunity to my new vitamin regimen. I addition to a daily multivitamin, I've been taking L-Lysine (500 mg) twice daily, plus a daily dose of selenium (200 mcg), zinc (25 mg), and biotin (1000 mcg). It works better for me than Echinacea, Airborne, or any of those other popular cold remedies.

Ironically, my goal in taking these vitamins was to defeat a chronic skin infection...which still keeps coming back. But at least I'm cold/flu free.

I got it about 3 weeks ago. I really don't normally get sick, but when I do, it puts me out of commission for a while. Last time I got the flu before this year was 2002, I think.. when I feel some kind of virus coming on, I usually just guzzle orange juice, maybe pop some vitamin C pills, get plenty of rest, and that usually stops it dead in its tracks.

The CDC announced last fall that the flu shot this time around would only be 33% effective because they had a harder than usual time nailing down which strains to plan for....

It is Always an educated guess each year on their part which flu strains to anticipate.
Info. from my own Dr. a few years ago.

I didn't bother getting one this time....and so far, so good.

I'm in your boat guys, just been laid out for 4 days, sore throat and mouth, in bed permanently, sweating at night and looking like a pile of devilled poo.
Today is the first day I have emerged from the bed, my bum is a bit sore from being parked for so long and I have square eyes from watching too much TV (which I only do if I'm sick).

I hate the ferking flu!!

My heart goes out to ye...

My remedy (hope you're listening TMM), grated fresh ginger, manuka honey and squeezed lemon heated slightly with a dash of powders (painkillers) if one is feeling particularly fucking awful. I always get it worst in the sinal area.

Well, I'd say it's pretty damned effective being that I haven't caught the flu from my roommates.

Make that two of us. Started as a massive Migrane and I haven't been able to sit upright for the last two days due to an intense dizziness.

The one I contracted from co-workers was a bizarre one. Fever the first couple of days, but it never escalated into a full-blown head/sinus congestion. Weeks it took to get rid of it, lost my voice for a day, hoarse for several more days, but again, no head/sinus congestion. Eventually it escalated to heavy chest & throat phlegm, you know, the nasty green slime that is about as thick and slimey/slick as lithium grease and about the size of a raw oyster.

About a month to the day after the initial fever, it's finally gone and I'm back to 100% healthy. I'd make it thru a week of work, rest and rehab from it on the weekends, but the 2 and 3 day weekends weren't quite long enough away from the co-workers, who were dropping like flies to it. It's a nasty little bug, but when you're done with it, your immune to the next carrier you come in contact with. I work in healthcare so many of the co-workers were going to the emergency room to get prescriptions for it, if not have doctors from our network prescribe for the cure. One lady was popping penicillin for it, others were getting variations of the same class of drug to cure it.

Unlike the cold, the flu is airborne and (as scientists found out only months ago) thrives in cold and dry weather.

I've been sick for about a week. It really ramped up over last week and after having a 102 degree fever for 3 days, I'm feeling kinda blah and still having a lot of respiratory issues. Stupid illness.

Interestingly, I was just talking to a family member who is an Infectious Diseases specialist and works on things like the flu and other public health issues. She was telling me that Influenza and what we call "The Flu" are generally not the same thing. People don't realize how serious Influenza really is-- and if you're not laid on your back for a good few days to a week, you probably have some other viral infection. We tend to call any bad cold-like sickness with respiratory symptoms the flu.

Anyhow, I learned that when I was complaining that I had the flu. She said that if I was standing up I didn't have the flu. I still, however, feel like shit that's been hit by a bus.

I've been sick this past week too.... In fact, it's my bedtime, yet again... I think I've been sleeping like a newborn the past few days... I sleep, wake only to use the bathroom, eat something and then get back in bed. Thankfully no nausea just yet... whew... But I'm wiped OUT!

I didn't even go anywhere on Saturday - and I wanted to go into NYC... instead, I slept all day. And night.

Last year the local hospital sent out an information brochure about the impending flu pandemic. I wish I could remember if I saved it or where I might have put it, because it had some really interesting information, but I'll have to go from memory.

Here's the gist of it: Another flu pandemic is inevitable, and could hit anytime in the next few years. Right now scientists are thinking it will be a strain of avian flu. When it hits, the death toll could be in the hundreds of thousands. Due to so many people being sick, there could be interruption of a variety of services (water, utilities, trash pick-up, transportation, shipping) and shortages of food and medicine. Hospitals, doctors offices, clinics, etc. will be overwhelmed.

The brochure also had a list of "how to prepare for the flu pandemic" which included things like stockpiling medicine and canned and pre-packaged foods. They also recommeded having enough bottled water to last everyone in the household for something like 2 weeks, in case water service was interrupted. I'm not sure, but I think they recommended storing something like a gallon per person per day. I don't know about you, but I don't have a place to store 14+ gallons of water.

Of course, I am totally unprepared for an flu pandemic, or any other kind of emergency that might hit.
