Which in fact is the greatest thing in life? To love yourself or to love someone else?

    I offer two songs:

    The Greatest Love of All

I believe that children are our future
Teach them well and let them lead the way
Show them all the beauty they possess inside
Give them a sense of pride to make it easier
Let the children's laughter remind us how we used to be

    Everybody's searching for a hero
People need someone to look up to
I never found anyone who fulfilled my need
A lonely place to be and so I learned to depend on me

I decided long ago never to walk in anyone's shadow
If I fail, if I succeed at least I'll live as I believe
No matter what they take from me, they can't take away my dignity
Because the greatest love of all is happening to me
I found the greatest love of all inside of me
The greatest love of all is easy to achieve

Learning to love yourself, it is the greatest love of all

I believe that children are our future
Teach them well and let them lead the way
Show them all the beauty they possess inside
Give them a sense of pride to make it easier
Let the children's laughter remind us of how we used to be

I decided long ago never to walk in anyone's shadow
If I fail, if I succeed at least I'll live as I believe
No matter what they take from me, they can't take away my dignity
Because the greatest love of all is happening to me
I found the greatest love of all inside of me
The greatest love of all is easy to achieve

Learning to love yourself, it is the greatest love of all
And if by chance that special place that you've been dreaming of
Leads you to a lonely place, find your strength in love

    Or is it...

    Nature Boy

    There was a boy
    A very strange enchanted boy
They say he wandered very far, very far
    Over land and sea
A little shy and sad of eye
    But very wise was he

    And then one day
A magic day he passed my way
And while we spoke of many things
    Fools and kings
    This he said to me
"The greatest thing you'll ever learn
Is just to love and be loved in return"

"The greatest thing you'll ever learn
Is just to love and be loved in return"

I think the later is probably the best. One should have self love but loving others will reap big dividends in the long run.

I think Nature Boy is the one.

I am a very all or nothing person, I love with my whole heart or not at all. I don't think I've ever regretted loving someone else, even when it ended badly.

They're both good, but I have heard that you have to love yourself before you can love others. This is probably true.

I love the song "Nature Boy"! Yep, love Nat King Cole... that song and "Unforgettable" are great. Not my usual kind of music, but I've always loved his voice.

Of course I'll take the incomparable Nat King Cole. Nature Boy has always been a favorite.

I do seem to be leaning towards the idea that loving yourself first really enables you to fully love someone else as an adult.
