When I was in college....I was introduced to a teacher from a nearby school to assist me with my thesis. He was in his early 40's and a goodlooking/friendly guy. Well, Viking, a lot of young straight guys relate to the Spanish experience: Older woman to teach them things. (In Mexico, for example, the age of consent's 12 because boys around 12 usually go to a prostitute.) Maybe not 40s, and we usually grow out of this some time in college.

The classical Greek motif was specifically addressed to young males - specifically defined as the age between the first appearance of pubic hair and the arrival of facial hair (beards defining manhood).

It is also to be noted that male homosexuality in no way was a &#39;majority&#39; thing in classical Greece. It should also be noted that it is impossible to generalise about Ancient Greece since it was so diverse and dis-unified. Athens, Sparta and Thebes were known for their &#39;liberal&#39; views on homosexuality, but this was not constant across the Greek world of that era. Corinth for example was particularly noted for female prostitution.

And it is to be noted that even in Athens, there were several (failed) attempts to make it illegal.

I think you have it reversed. A Greek man was completely faithful to his eromenos, but not necessarily to his wife.

Not surprising. Most cultures take a &#39;bros before hos&#39; attitude, and maybe a bit of &#39;chicks before dicks&#39; on the side.

The eromenos was a youth, not a child, and anal intercourse between a pedagogue and the eromenos was strictly forbidden: &#39;intercourse&#39; was intercrural, not penetratory. Sometimes pederasty is also used as a shorthand for &#39;age-discordant homosexuality&#39;, meaning a type of institutionalized homosexuality where roles (and not just in the bedroom) are determined by age. Typically found more in state-level societies, but it does occur in some pre-state societies as well. (I&#39;m thinking New Guinea here.)

Most homosexuality, cross-culturally, can be divided into that, the gender system (feminine men or masculine women), or adolescent fun. The &#39;gay&#39; system, e.g. two members of the same sex approximately the same age and who after they&#39;re initiated (a.k.a. coming out) will never engage in another heterosexual act, is actually a novelty.
