Ok, those two are just right out!

Those two words sound nothing like eachother on ABC, NBC, or the BBC!

Concerning the words lather and lava

I must extend my appy - polly - loggies.

The lovely lads in the chat room have just explained to me that although nonstandard throughout the rest of the UK, there is a very strong tendancy within large areas of London to replace th with v. The replacement of the er with a at the end of lather is rather more common and can be found within speaking reagions of the US as well.

Um, I'm NOT trying to be mean, but these typically don't sound anything alike to native speakers, but are usually pronounced identically when learned as a 2nd language.
The firsts (beach & sheet) use "long 'e'," and the seconds (bitch & shit) use "short 'i'," in their pronunciations. The difficulty is that in most other languages, the "i" actually IS natively pronounced as an "ee" (long 'e') sound. So it's confusing.

As an example, I know many Russians that hear no difference between

beer, bear, pear, and beard

Continuing the thread:
pear, pair, pare
