Well, one of the children I work with in my non-profit asked me to go to see the movie with her today. I loved having a girls day with her.

I have not read the book, but I've heard a lot about the movie. Apparently not enough, because I really wasn't prepared. Everything was happening so fast and the editing was so chopped up that I had a hard time keeping up with what was going on!

Maybe I am just old-fashioned but I was still shocked to see the horrors on the screen and nobody in the theatre really getting worked up about it. As long as our favorite character doesn't die it doesn't matter if everybody else does.

Not really my type of movie at all. I guess I was expecting another Harry Potter or something.

What was your friends opinion. I to hate vids that jump around and change camera angles every few seconds. Movies are not music videos. Less is more.

POTENTIAL SPOILERS?

I read all three books almost immediately before seeing the first movie, so without any spoofers, I know exactly how everyone will turn out. That being said, the only complaints I have against the movie are studio driven. I don't like that the brutality that drew so many people to the books was watered down to a PG-13 rating, and I'm not a fan of the forshadowing sequences this movie held to promote the next film. Other than that, I can honestly say Jennifer Lawrence did a FANTASTIC job as Katniss and I never doubted she would. I wish Peeta didn't look so old in some scenes, Though he's still fucking cute as hell in my book :)

People are desensitized at this point generally.

(spoiler if anyone cares) One of the parts of the book that really struck me as terrible was how Katniss watched the little girl she befriended (who she was basically confusing for her own sister half the time) die in front of her and her only reaction was being depressed for a few hours. Then, bam, she's making out with Peeta.

Unrealistic behavior in my mind. The book and film I mentioned earlier, Battle Royale, is far more reasonable about this to me. The vast majority of the children experience mental breakdowns as they see the insane violence of what's happening, leaving mostly sadistic psychos and a couple of "survivor" types from the much larger original pool.

Anyway, just one of the many things I thought the book missed the boat on. I also have no idea why it's so popular with women generally.

Well most of everything in this book is unrealistic hence it being fiction.

And the girl that she basically watched die couldn't be saved. According to the book, the arrow was plunged deep enough into Rue for Katniss to know she couldn't do anything. What was she supposed to do, sit there and try to be a magician?

The reason she was making out with Peeta is because of their star crossed lovers shtick and hoping she'd get something (food/medicine) from the Capitol. She had a role to play and she played it hard to get what she wanted.

Battle Royale blah blah blah. And maybe the fact that the main character of the story is a girl who's fighting the entire world (and her own inner demons) is why this is so popular with women.

Never heard of it and had no idea what to expect but when I heard it was a "post apocalyptic" film I had to go see it as that is my favorite genre of film. It was pretty good, I definitely enjoyed it. Reminded me of The Running Man. I'd like to see Battle Royale now though as the psychological havoc I suspect would be a little more poignant in that film.

Well, my little friend enjoyed the movie so much because she strongly identified with the heroine. I think gore and horror are lost on this generation because they're desensitized with everything they see on both the large and small screen. I can't take it, personally. I asked her how she could put up with it, and I even asked if Katniss would take it that coolly. She responded that Katniss had probably been watching it for years and saw her favorites struck down, so that when it happened in real life she just did what she could to survive. Sounds plausible, I guess.

Loved it. I only started hearing much about it, mostly seeing people reading the books and people getting excited for the film. Just came back from it and I had no real initial feelings towards it but very well done and enjoyable.

I definitely recommend Battle Royale!

Wasn't the basic premise of this series done before when it was called "Logan's Run"?
Aye. Reminded me of that, too.

I enjoyed the film.
Loved the books as Dystopian novels have always been a favourite of mine. Definite hints of The Running Man (closer to the Stephen King book rather than the god awful movie) and Brave New World by Aldous Huxley.

I watched the dvd and was disappointed.

Never read the book, but knew what it was about before renting.

Considering all the hype, I thought the movie would be epic.

It's just another run-of-the-mill, low budget teen action movie ... without much action.
