When and what was it? (you can post several incidents if there are that many)

i do not mean just a bit nervous obviously, i mean pure terror, in a situation (like a car accident, or the victim of a crime, a seriously bumpy plane ride, , on a boat in high seas, or extreme injury...)

for me,

-being chased by several gang members in Baltimore about 17 years ago.
-a terrifying plane ride in a white/snowstorm with extreme turbulence and high winds (another plane was on the runway as we came in for landing, and we had to accelerate and climb right before touching down, to go around again and experience it all over)

this past september, was on vacation at the beach with my parents. I went running along the beach very early in the morning. When I got a few miles up the beach (out of sight of the last beachhouse) I took off my shorts and buried them half in the sand so they wouldnt blow away. I ran into the ocean and rode waves about 10 minutes. It was windy, starting to rain and the tide was coming in. Tide had also pulled me far down the ocean. When I got out I could not find the shorts, and I was buck naked. No where to run, nothing in sight to cover up with. Had no idea how far down the tide had pulled me so I didnt even know where to look, there were NO landmarks......to make matters worse, as the sun rose, morning dogwalkers would start to wander up the beach.....(to be cont'd)

It was watching a fully loaded 18 wheeler come roaring down Interstate 50 from near the top of Spooner Summit with no brakes...or...should I say...with its brakes on fire, trailers swinging, horn blaring, traffic scattering at what must have been over 100 mph. It all happened so fast.

I stood at an intersection with my bicycle and watched the truck looming ever closer. It was if time were in slow motion. The desperate driver was faced with the propsect of:

1) Running over me and my bicycle on the side of the roadway.
2) Runnig over a group of backpackers on the other side of the roadway.
3) Plowing at full speed through a busy intersection against a redlight.
4) Sacrificing himself by driving off a small cliff to spare others certain death.

He chose death for himself.

The entire truck and trailers left the roadway and sailed out into space. Again, time in slow motion as well all watched in horror.

The cab landed in a field full of sagebrush with a tremendous bang and a cloud of dust. The trailers following behind crushed everything into compact oblivion. Like a train wreck.

No hollywood explosion. No fire. Just a big clatter and bang followed by settling dust.

Traffic stopped and everyone ran out into the sagebrush. The cab and its driver were unrecognizable, compressed into a fraction of their former length. No need to bother with emergency extraction equipment.

Yah. Terrifying.

I was held up on the street at knife point coming home from a party late one night when i lived in Boston.

But the most terrified I've ever been was when I was working at a cafe in an "up and coming" neighborhood in the early/mid-90s. A gang of teenagers with bandanas over their faces and guns played "hostage games" with three customers and me for nearly a half hour on a quiet afternoon. They got about $60.

  • My sixth grade teacher tried to hang me by the neck on a coathook while he was beating me up.
  • A strange man tried to get me into his car while I was waiting for a school bus at the end of our 1/4 mile long driveway.
  • I was driving a Dodge Aspen wagon way too fast on the Saw Mill and headed into a 25mph signed curve. I shouted to my friends, "EVERYBODY LEAN!" and I took that car sideways, in traffic, around the curve, and actually managed to recover the slide. I was shaking so badly I had to pull over and throw up.
  • On I-80 in Pennsylvania in the dead of night on an empty highway two tractor trailers were racing each other and appeared in my rear view mirror as they just came over the hill. They were closing so quickly I could do nothing but accelerate my POS Dodge Omni as fast as it could go and try to get over to the side of the road gradually. The one truck was right on me with its horn blaring and the asshole wasn't trying to slow down. So I ditched the car onto the shoulder as best as I could and they both blew by me. What I would have given for cell phones at that point.
  • Being told I have stage four esophageal cancer and discovering that 96% of patients with it die within five years of diagnosis. 93% are dead within two.

That Trucker died a hero.

Yeah, wow. What a hero indeed :frown1:

Its true. Every once in a while something occurs to remind me of that day and I get a bit choked up with sentimentality. I haven't passed by that site in 30 years but I could still likely find the skid marks and impact crater in the sagebrush.

It's odd how true courage and selflessness can appear at the most unlikely instants.

Driving home from work one day in my lil Ford Escort and having an 18 wheeler start coming over on my while I was going up beside him (I was doing 75, speed limit was 65) I had to hit the breaks and ride half way in the ditch to get out of his way.
Being chased by my cousin on a 4 wheeler and having her run me over from behind and bending my legs back to where my heels were beside my ears.
Walking along the road and having a creepy man scream at me to get in his car. I took of running and grabed my cell out of my pocket.
Being told that the doctors where going to break my neck on in surgery. Yes they really did do it. Then waking up with 4 8" long screws in my head. I still have those and they still have blood stains on them from when they took them out, the front ones had been put in to deep and were in the bone so they hurt like a bitch coming out.
