Ah how I love the Olympics -- where America will cheer for her heroes and temporarily forget that some of them in the future:

Will be hurt and not be able to afford their medical insurance OR
Where their medical treatments may be denied by their insurance companies;
Where some will have their moment of glory but won't be able to find a job;
Where some will end up losing their houses due to personal bad financial decisions (or being deceived into false economic promises)
Where some won't have Medicare to supplement them when their 85! (IF Paul Ryan has his way)
and finally where SOME of them still don't have the right to marry those they might love.

Don't you wish the Olympics were held yearly instead of just bi-annually??

Just spent the last couple of hours trying to find out how much of taxpayers money goes toward our prestige athletes competing in the Olympic games. This was with the close help of someone who is not estranged from researching government records. Closest we can come up with is the Aussie taxpayer donates federally (Federal Government) close to 600 million dollars annually to Olympic sports. This does not include State government contributions, or commercial contributions.

I am wondering how many potential athletes from not so well off countries would benefit from a small amount of that funding. Perhaps it would make the Olympics a fairer playing field, like it was meant to be. I always enjoyed watching Kenya flog the rest of the worlds arses when it came to running the marathon. Does not cost anything to run...until computers..... and Nike became involved :).

Run Forest....ruuuun.

^ I agree. I'm forever amazed at the talent and imagination shown at the opening. Its very emotional. And I have to admit I get a little chocked up when the Canadians march in. The dedication of all the athletes is very inspiring.

it is clear that the olympics are anathema to most of the male, USA-centric, NFL worshipping men in the US. sad to say, most of them havent a clue that there is a great world of real athletic sport out there that doesnt require endless amounts of money, vulgar behavior or temper tantrums on the field. money doesnt improve sports, it ruins it.

The opening ceremony was arranged to run to 1 AM presumably for the benefit of the audience. Hardly for the benefit of atheletes expected to compete the next day.

The fuss over the security contract for 10,000 security guards which was given to game sponsors G4S continues. Aside from failing to provide anything like the number of people they wer contracted for, the ones they have managed to provide dont know what to do. The army and police are being paid overtime to do the job. a few prime G4S specimens have already been arrested for theft and others found to have been illegally working here. This after their security screening had happened. Hardly surprising since the method of recruitment seems to have been an initial screening and then telling them to come back just before the games for more training and to actually start being paid. Many seem to have quietly melted away in the months betwen being hired and actually being called upon to start paid work.

London visitor attractions are complaining because after the dire warnings about how busy london will be, everyone has decided this is a bad time to visit. So its a good time for cheap theatre tickets.

This morning's radio carried a news story about how New York is having a much more profitable games than is London (on account of having failed to win the bid and had a more sensibly managed and cheaper redeveopment project instead).

Sounds like the fools' should be stripped of every penny they have received, (that will force them into bankruptcy, if not already heading there) and the amount given to the faithful Volunteers
(understand its one of/if not the Worlds largest 'bungling' security? firm)

all over the world, no matter what Volunteers will usually reign supreme ..

Hate to think of the final bill to the British taxpayer, but assume the Govt would have been expecting a HUGE loss as usual, when they won the games ..
gonna be an even bigger loss then?

The Olympics should be a celebration...skill, strength, artistry, endurance, friendship, camaraderie...and that is what is happening inside the Olympic village and venues. Outside it's about one-up-manship, superiority, economic and political benefit, monetarism. Let's leave the arguments about the second part until after the games and just celebrate the absolute perfection and achievements of the athletes who have spent four years (and more) preparing for this. Has society become so cynical that we cab;t even be nice about something for the short time that the Olympics is running. The message from this Olympics is about passing something on to the next generation...lets hope it's optimism not doubt, strength not fear, friendship not hate, and optimism not self loathing.

Moan moan moan....Try and have some fun!

I went to Victoria park for the opening and it was an amazing atmosphere.
Tickets for the boxing which was great (never seen boxing live before)
Tickets for the Women's football GB vs Brazil. Not exactly the tickets I wanted but it was a good game and enjoyed.

Britain! World leader in MOANING.
