No it is not.

Thanks Vince!

I would miss this forum. It's the best general politics and current affairs forum I can find, perhaps because it is not hosted (as most are) by a group with a political agenda or a narrow interest, perhaps because of the large membership and national spread of lpsg which keeps the forum lively. Many people here do enter into constructive debate, reflect on their own and others' views, and people do change their views. This is remarkable! I'm not quite saying that a group of lpsg politics forum posters could solve all the problems of the world but I do think we could make a better stab at it than our political leaders.

I hope you're terribly wrong about the politics forum closing down. I'd like to see it kept open. For those that want to close it, they seem to me, are ones that don't care to participate. I believe this forum does a great service for those that Do follow politics. And in the same instance, inform those that do not.

That's fucking absurd.

JTB said it. you can take a shit on someone's ideas, just don't do it to their person. Don't worry, their little egos will be bruised none the less.

And don't worry, some of my best friends are Americans.

And if that's where it stopped... I'd be happy enough with it, as I generally employ enough diplomacy and tact not to attack a person (because some of my best friends actually repulse me physically) directly.

However, go take a gander at the thread about undecideds. I am engaged with a person who has gone out of his way to remake sentences so simple an autistic 1st grader could interpret their very direct meaning into something almost completely the opposite. Basically, "Black is dark." "So what you're saying is black is bright." To me that registers as one of two things; a person either purposefully trolling or a person who is so stubbornly attached to their own point of view they must remake someone else's argument in order to keep their own valid.

And I think that is where the problems start; the default reaction to perpetually being misread (and it becomes more and more difficult to believe it isn't purposeful) and misquoted is to question the ability of one's opponent to a.) read and b.) interpret sentences properly. So, step two after "Wow that's fucking absurd," is often "How fundamentally ass backward stupid does a person have to be read those words and draw that conclusion?"

At that point it isn't even about winning. It's about making the other person look like an idiot and, by proxy, the people who might support the idea they're espousing.

I've learned, on this site specifically, there is a point at which a mature person just walks away from the thread, rather than sliding in one last zinger. The thread I referenced earlier, for example- that's run its ground. If I went any further I'd likely wind up in "Do you suffer from a handicap" territory.

My ultimate point is that this isn't something that can be stopped without a sudden simultaneous surge of self-filtering and maturity- two things not in abundance anywhere, but especially not on the internet. Regulate it, makes rules, implement policy... it won't ever stop happening because it is the nature of debate on-line.

Before the Politics sub forum was created in 2008, many members were complaining about political debates littering this site, especially the Etc sub forum. The Politics forum was an effort to segregate political debates that seemed to upset some people.

If we got rid of the Politics sub forum, we'd be back to the mess we were in years ago.

Did everyone see the new sticky?

http://www.lpsg.com/318266-important-notice-to-all.html

I know I personally never pay attention to those stickies up top. The only reason I noticed it was because Vince referenced it in another thread. It seems more than a few have missed it based on their recent posts.

Also, can we all just take a moment to realize the hypocrisy of the previous post.

Again you didn't reference what you were referring to. The hypocrisy of Evie post is that she said hate speech is so wrong. That just so happens to be what she was banned for. No one has posted in this thread since then or I would have pointed out the hypocrisy earlier.

Hey tamati. Quit with the name calling. If you think someone is trolling you, report it.
