I college the stalls had full walls and full doors on them. The walls were made out of something like marble the the doors were wooden. Went from ceiling to floor - almost like a closet with a toilet. They were big too. It was a great place to meet guys and just go into a stall and have fun as long as you were quiet about it. This was an older college with old bathrooms. It had the old type toilets and urinals that went all the way to the floor and you had to step up on a step to get to the urinals. Looks like they were from the 40's.

You know, I usually always go alone but I have a bro-in-law and a cousin who always seem to wait until I go and then they try to follow me in...seems weird.

I really hate it when that happens coz you can't back out of it. So awkward. I like to piss in private, so I can have a pleasant little fart at the end.

it's for privacy. I can remember one big communal trough, and guys embarrassed for 2 reasons, too small and too big. every once in awhile you had some guy who just had to comment.

Such a bummer to see the partitions/ dividers going up but understand why. The newer trend in architecture is seeing single toilet restrooms going up or built in partition walls at urinals. Also new is removing urinals so only one is there. I snapped a shot of this restroom at a McDonald's renovated in recent years. It's obvious there were two urinals at one time, but now only one remaining. IMG_20181008_160230.jpg

I prefer them. Some men are pigs and pee on the walls simply because they can. I would rather not get splashed with it.

Modern urinals seem to be a "bucket" of various sizes hung on the wall, often with partitions. But I remember the days when urinals not only had no partitions, but reached from almost chest high down to the floor. A man could take a proper piss in that, without making a mess!

This takes me back to younger years when I was in college and high school. The older buildings had those and don't recall splash back while using those.

I think in some places building codes require certain things - at least at the time of construction. Many bars show evidence of partitions which were broken off but never replaced. I think a more interesting question is the design of bathroom stalls. Clearly they were designed to provide some degree of privacy - but not too much. Somebody had to conjure up how high up off the floor the partition should begin and at what height it should end, the width and depth dimensions - presumably to discourage sexual activity - and somehow convince others in the industry that a standard of those dimensions has been studied and found to be optimum for providing enough privacy to comfortably take a dump without providing enough privacy for most people inclined to have same sex encounters with strangers to want to do it there.

It seems to me to be for more privacy.

Partitions cost money and are more work for the janitor to clean, so it seems clear that it is for the "comfort factor" for pissers who dislike peeking. There's probably more of one's own urine splashing back to be concerned about than that from the next urinal.

If it is government money (civic buildings etc) you can be assured it was prompted from complaints about undesired sexual looking and activities etc.
Once I was taking a piss next to a guy in my barracks during Army Basic Training. We were using a trough urinal. He had a very strong pee stream. I could feel the splash back on the hand I was holding my dick with. I think I told him about it later and he apologized to me.

We had these in college. I don't ever remember getting spashed by a neighbor. Privacy wasn't a concern back then. My dormmates an I all routinely saw each others' penises as part of every dorm life...getting in and out of the shower, etc...so there wasn't a need to hide them from each other while pissing.

Don’t take this as a harsh criticism but:

When you mentioned it, he should have just asked you if it tasted salty or sweet.

In polite society there was no reason for you to council him about how a basic trainee should control his bladder while peeing in a trough urinal.

And there was definitely no reason for him to apologize for the event. ----Unless you were making reference to the event in order to enhance your friendship (??).

I just told him matter of factly. I didn't like that my hand was getting splattered with his piss. But it was ok, I'm sure he didn't do it on purpose. I guess if he had aimed his stream away from me it wouldn't have happened.

I think the primary purpose is so that bladder-shy guys, like myself, have a better shot of actually being able to urinate.
You and me both. I usually head to the stalls for a quiet piss but you can end up going in right after someone’s done a monstrous stinky crap or next to someone doing a monstrous stinky crap and take the blame for it too. What do men actually eat to make those kind of smells?

I remember at a sports event there was a trough but half of the people waited in line for a stall. I understand.

Why partitions aren't there: cost, efficiency, (high volume of people = they are able to fit a few more fixtures in the same amount of space), partitions make it more difficult to keep clean (you can't use some equipment to clean the restroom so it takes longer), building codes require a certain amount of each fixture per expected number of building occupants, and to keep lines down.

Usually, when I've had to pee for hours, any bladder shyness is overridden. I do sympathise though.

I've noticed that more and more public places are installing partitions around the urinals in their men's rooms.

What do you think is the main purpose of these partitions?

Is it to prevent the user from getting splattered with urine from the guy standing next to him, or is it to discourage "penis peeking" and possibly some hands-on sexual activities like groping or maybe even a quick blow job?

I'd be interested in hearing what you guys think.

Thanks!

Maybe because people can’t mind their own business.

Men’s washroom at the local college. No dividers. Longest stretch of urinals in another washroom is seven. Gets busy between classes.

Nearby arts venue has 8-10 in a row with no dividers - gets busy there before and after a show.
