Of course the Catholic Church is COMPLETELY neutral to gay people, right?
I have never claimed such a thing. There's a long way to go, but if there's ever to be acceptance in the Church, it's going to come from within, not from those on the outside grumbling. The Church's attitude towards the gay members of her congregation is better than it was twenty years ago, and it will only continue to get better if the practicing Catholics active in their parishes make their stand known. The Church is my home; I have a right to try to make things more comfortable there.

Actually, I am quite happy that there are those who DO feel as you do, DMW, and who actively work to affect changes from within. We all pick our battles, and to do so out of love for one's religion is an admirable thing.

That I support many things that the Democratic party supports does not mean I agree with every word and action of every person who claims to be a democrat. I am sure the same is true of religions. There have been vast improvements in the Catholic church in the last twenty years, many of which would not have occured if everyone chose to leave rather than stay and affect change. Many of these things I would not have even known about had I not been a member here and had the benefit of learning from you. If there are fine points to which we do not agree implicitly, I know that we certainly see things similarly in spirit.

I hope you never give up the fight, never give in to the simple minds, and please- never stop telling us how it really is inside Catholicism, because so few of us really know.

Papal infallibility does not come into play here.
from what you're saying, it shouldn't come into play at all, if the pope is just a regular dude with his own opinions, beliefs and inconsistencies ... who just happens to be the undisputed overlord of a religion with over a billion followers. :eyes:

Ummm ... "I'll be your leader by not saying anything."
sounds a whole lot better to me. maybe you should write to him!

Papal infallibility has only been invoked twice, and it can only give ascendence to theological beliefs alread present in the church. the immaculate conception is probably the best example of this. Orthodox churches have a similar practice but with a more democratic vote by the bishops.

I don't have a big problem with those who work from within a movement to change things about it that they don't like. I do however have a big problem with people who SAY they are doing that but act as nothing more than apologists for the organization that is doing such hateful and hurtful things towards their fellow human beings.

I'm no apologist. I'm very aware of the problems in the Church. I have been a lay Eucharistic minister and a lector for Hispanic ministry. I have been active in my parish council and have worked with the diocesan youth board. I am active in the Church, and am open about my sexuality. I am accepted as a gay man and a practicing Catholic. But I see the problems present in the big picture, and I'm doing what I can to help change it. The Church has a long way to go, and the changes I'm hoping for might not happen in my lifetime, but I won't sit idly by. Every little step I take might make a difference. If not, I won't be able to say that I didn't put forth the effort.

It has been my creed since the Reagan years:

"The moral majority are neither moral nor a majority."

Hell no the so-called Christians of today DO NOT speak for me.
