I don't know where our society is heading but I fear for it. Colleges are the worst offenders but I've seen similar situations at my work place as well. A coworker of mine was fired for sexual harassment when he was overheard to say, "Go mow the lawn," to another woman as a joke in conversation. The woman who overheard it filed sexual harassment charges with HR and he was out the next day. Rather than give him any say they claimed a, "zero tolerance policy," and fired him just on this other woman's claim.
The irony is that I've spoken to women at work and I've been asked, "Do you like my new shoes/dress/hairdo?," and the like and all I can do is tell them I refuse to comment on anything having to do with their appearance. They get dejected looks and give a sad, "I guess not," once the lightbulb goes off that any man making any comment could be grounds for firing; solicited or not.
America has become the Le Théâtre de l'Absurde. Our economy is in enormous peril due to debt and unfunded obligations, the middle class is shrinking, Congress is rubber stamping spending as if nothing mattered, we're stuck in a war we do not have the will to win, declining economic opportunity (we're now behind Spain), a Federal Reserve that makes glorious statements about being concerned with inflation yet prints $3.8 billion dollars a week in money we don't have, we've lost any respect we've ever had abroad, our press is self-censored, spun, and directed to self-serving ends (spend consumers! spend!) by the media conglomerates that own 76% of it, an educational system that's the laughingstock of the first world, we're losing or have lost by legislation or fiat our most valuable constitutional rights, facing serious environmental and energy issues, drugging our male youth into a submissive stupor, and what do we worry about? Paris Hilton, nose jobs, mcmansions designed so nobody in the family interacts with each other, 6th graders getting Tasered, 2nd graders getting arrested and taken away in handcuffs for sexual harassment, hiring lifestyle coaches to tell us how to live our lives, and thinking of new ways to outspend our neighbors whlie the average savings of a 60 year old totals about $30,000. and more than 75% of Americans have a negative savings rate (i.e.- they spend more money than they take in).
We are SO screwed and the great majority of Americans have no clue.
