I remember in the 70s when Carly Simon made her Torch album. Everyone said she was insane to do it, no one would listen to it. I liked that album tho I thot the results were mixed. Her voice was matched better to some songs than others. YouTube - Carly Simon - When Your Lover Has Gone She seems to be rushing the lyrics a bit as opposed to a version of the same song by Linda Ronstadt who had a much better feel for the songs and the era and the nuances of singing this music. Well it didn't hurt that she had Nelson Riddle at the helm of her fantastic trilogy of lps. PLus the packaging on her lps was very inspired! Bob Magnusson - When Your Lover Has Gone (LP Version) - Free MP3 Stream on IMEEM Music Linda's trilogy is such a masterpiece in a listener's experience. Does anyone have other examples of contemporary artists doing older music and doing it well? Bjork did a great cover of Betty Hutton's It's Oh So Quiet tho the video is not so good YouTube - It's, Oh, So Quiet Official Video with Lyrics on Screen And of course kely did a great Betty Hutton cover on Idol YouTube - Kelly Clarkson: Stuff Like That There She nailed it on that video. When the swing revival happened in the 90's alot of people attempted this music and most met a modicum of results and most even less. Kelly even managed to nail it on this version of a Tony Bennet song YouTube - Kelly Clarkson singing Tony Bennett's "it's alright with me", She's doing a straight on June christy or an Edye Gorme. A great performance either way. Who else has nailed it as far a pop performers go? As far as performers that you didn't think would attempt this genre or maybe you did?
