With regards to my older thread entitled Moving On.....
Tnite my doorbell rang. I can't hear it unless I'm in the main part of my apartment but I did tnite. I went and looked thru the peephole. It was the woman that moved into the apartment of my friend died in across the hall. I opened the door and she had a box in her outstretched hands.
I said oh HI (I hadn't seen her since she moved in) and in her broken english she held out the box and said she wanted to give me a cake. I was flabberghasted. She had a big cheery smile on her face and seemd so happy to present me w/this even tho I couldn't figure out why. I was actually gonna ring there bell after they had more time to settle in.
She told me her name and I told her mine and she asked if I liked sweets and said it was a welcome gift. It is an elaborately decorated cake. She asked if I liked sweets (I admit I lied and said yes because I didn't want to insult her) and accepted her gracious gift. It's absolutley a beautiful cake.
I must admit I'm shocked b/c since they first nite they moved in and rang my bell and asked if I had a drill (I didn't) I haven't even seen them. I'm wondering if someone told them my friend of 30 yrs lived there for 25 and maybe they thot I felt weird about someone else moving in there? I can't figure this reverse welcome wagon thing out? Any ideas. It's a very sweet gesture nonetheless. It's too bad that beautiful cake (""cake is an insult to it. It's more like a gourmet desert) wil sit in my fridge till it dies.
    I'm really speechless.

Oh HKM I'm really at a loss for words. The NY real estate karma has given you a lovely neighbor. You can now always think of your friend and that a thoughtful family has moved in. They will never take her place...but as NY neighbors go you really hit the jackpot!
PS You can send the cake to me!

Maybe they found out about your friend, or they're just breaking the ice? Who knows. Maybe where they're from you're supposed to do a reverse welcome wagon lol. Freeze the masterpiece and serve it next time you have guests over! And take pics so the rest of us can fantasize about eating it

I will take pics. I'm going to leave them a thank you note and say if they need any help or advice about the neighborhood to feel free to ask me. Honestly it was such a nice esture of goodwill that I don't know how to repay it.

Holy. Shit. That is a piece of art! I'm starting to agree with your theory that she found out about your friend. If her English is broken, then it might've been easier for her to express what she wanted to say to you with the cake.

I didn't know that people didn't like sweets

Don't let it go to waste. Give it to a friend. Try some at least so if she asks you how it was you can describe it.

That might be true. But in a weird way it's also making me want to pay it forward and do something good for someone else. I really am so touched by this gesture tnite. I can't even say. In tis crazy NYC that something so little and kind could mean so much....

Wow! That's a cake! A very expensive cake! In fact, it doesn't look like a cake at all, but a torte. Ummm, did I mention that I'm bringing Nick8 home tomorrow? We'll be back at 1pm .

You say she spoke in broken English. Perhaps it's part of her culture to greet and give gifts to new neighbours. Either way, that cake looks absolutely delicious. Don't you dare let it go to waste!

OMG! If I still lived in Jersey I would be on the next train to the city. That cake is a PMS Dream! Where is this Canaan bakery? Does she work there? Own it? Do they ship their gorgeous confections?

    I second this oppinion.

Or maybe you've already paid the price? I don't think good things happen to people so that we can go do something else nice in turn. I think it works the opposite; you do something nice and you're rewarded for it.

OK so here's the deelio. At the risk of soounding like a bitter and jaded New Yorker, as floored as I was by this gesture something didn't add up. For one..I never saw that gal again and then it seemed like people were coming in and out w/suitcases every other day. Then another woman who appeared to be the tenant said hello. Turns out their running an illegal hotel for asian visitors in that apt. and the cake was like 'hush money'. This is also happening on another floor in my bldg. HIGHLY illegal in terms of tenant laws. My landlord (no prize) is on i tho! Personally I don't care if people do this, in fact if I could charge someone 500$ to rent my living room for a week I'd do it too. But unfort. it's a no-no.
