People don't realize that we in America do have socialized public medicine. It's called the county health service and the VA hospitals both run and administered by the government. People discount these forms of socialized medicine, where the services are free for the poor and uninsured, probably because the quality of health care given in these government institutions is perceived as far from acceptable. They are run as effectively and efficiently as the US Postal Service.

The opponents of socialized medicine fear that these will be the models of health care delivery in America. A system of uncontrolled costs, inefficiency without any incentives to improve, poorly administered and managed and all the problems which plague any large government run institution.

In the end a person's life has no price. This fundamental belief is the root cause of the out of control costs in healthcare today where market forces do not apply. There is morally no ceiling to cost or charges. HMO CEO's who make tens of millions of dollars a year, nurses who make $120K a year working 20 hours a week, drug and medical equipment supply salespeople who easily make $1 million/yr, astronomically overpriced prescription drugs, health care unions that bankrupt hospitals and doctors who enjoy 7 digit incomes. We need to look at the out of control supply side of the industry and curb all the greed in the industry to find any long term solution to our nation's health care problem. The system is completely broken and has been for the past 30 plus years and institutionalized greed at every level has been the engine of it's demise.
