In a way I never wear them because I just don't care about showing off, and that's pretty much what speedos are for. But I also just don't have a good build for it. I'm fairly hair and have a lot of muscle bulk in my legs and ass, so a speedo would look comical on me. It's not really a matter of flab, just proportions.

RunnerSF: I swim laps and I've found speedos to be the most comfortable swimwear for laps. I've found the repeated motions can casue some chaffing with square cuts that I don't get in properly fitted (not too tight) speedos. I know lots of guys are self conscious about wearing them as they don't leave much to the imagination concerning what your sportin' soft. So what you say isn't unusual.
I do agree with the above though - usually its 30 seconds to the pool and then you're in the water - so I've never worried about it too much pretty much thinking the same thing. However, I am an average sized guy so I could see guys being even more self conscious given their larger size.
Square cuts are cool for the beach - the US is a bit more modest about showing our bodies then other cultures.
Of course, here in the Bay Area...I usually head to the nude beach and then I don't have to worry about wearing anything at all...

Well I have over 50 swim bikinis and I love to pack them with my dick and balls and show off the bulge...Its fun and when I do get hard... oh well! stand back and watch! So guys, gay or straight, if you have the body, wear the speedo. I spent some weekends at Dewey Beach, DE last summer, and me and a friend would stroll up to Rehoboth to check out thegreat bodies speedo packages on the gay guys.

But straight guys are only self-conscious because they think women hate them! Bah...we need some kind of rulebook.
While I'd be close to having Pappy's problem being a similar soft size, I'm hoping if I keep up my work-out schedule I might even be Speedo worthy
Besides self-consciousness, the main reason I don't wear Speedos is:
a ) I'd have idea which one to get (and there aren't that many places that sell them in the UK, at least not that I know of)
b ) The 'bunching' effect, creating an extra heavy package, makes getting out the pool a dangerous proposition (from what I remember from swimming lessons) - if there were beaches nearby it wouldn't be so bad, but pools...risky.
I just don't live in the right place on this earth. Now, why couldn't I live close to the beach and pool where Latinoboy9 wears his bikinis with his packed dick and balls showing off the bulge? I can just feel a hardon now from checking out his package. You're hot, Latinoboy.
BigDrew: Now, not that that I would ever do this, but if you want to cause a scene around the pool or beach, go ahead and tear out the lining in the speedo.

RunnerSF raises a good point about chafing with square-cut trunks. Another VERY important reason to wear Speedos for swimming laps is simple durability: Most gym and public pools are so highly chlorinated (for good reason) that they devour regular swim trunks. Ironically, after a few thousand laps in a public pool, a Speedo may actually offer better "coverage" or "concealment" than trunks because the lining/elastic in the trunks will be pretty much shot.

dayne: I wear speedos and for the most part just don't worry about what people think. (I did have a nasty little old lady make some rather pointed remarks at the gym one day!
The only real problem I've run into was out by the pool in Palm Springs a few years ago. I had fallen asleep out on a lounger. -_- There is also a restaurant by the pool at The Desert Palms. When I woke, I noticed I was getting some looks, especially from one man who had pretty much stopped eating. About that time I realized I was hard and had come right out of the speedo I was wearing. I was happy to be wearing very dark wrap around sunglasses B) as no one knew i was awake. Interesting to see the reactions of people who came out to the patio when they saw me. I think that is part of the reason I didn't correct the situation and I stayed hard as long as I did, ha, ha. }(
