I read some of the books during the first season. I didn't think much of them. The show is much better.

Aw, really? I enjoyed the first 7 or so books, but I find the show a bit of a let down because a lot of the humour is missing. I'm an Eric girl... but out of all of the characters Pam is hands-down my fave.

Yeah, and her books are really popular, it just wasn't my thing. Some of the things she has the guys do creeped me out from the first book, stuff that doesn't appear in the show at all. Bill acted awfully rapey in her books in a way that particularly bothered me. In the third book I thought she had Bill acting completely out of character and I thought the plot twist was ridiculous. Bill was a totally different person in that book like she was just trying to get him out of the way and couldn't figure out a way to do it that would be consistent with the character she had already developed. I like the changes in the show a lot better. The character development is a lot better, I think.

I also enjoy all the almost soft core porn scenes. It doesn't hurt. I am a perv.

I'm really picky about romance, though. I watch lots of romance movies and I hate almost all of them because of their stupid plots, shallow and stereotypical characters and the tired or unrealistic tropes (like the asshole who changes by falling for the right woman), but I still watch them because I'm also a romantic fool and I really want to find ones I like.

For silly fun, I prefer Terry Pratchett, although he better start writing books faster because I'm running out of them to read.

Poor Terry Pratchett - he's not very well. He has a form of Alzheimer's. :frown1:

I found them fun, but I can't disagree with your assessment of the books and I think your points about Bill are the reason I can't like him in the show, despite the changes. I haven't watched the most recent season because... well, I couldn't be arsed tbh. Also, Tara's wobbly bottom lip and over-acting made me want to put my foot through the screen. I decided An American Horror Story was a far better use of my time ;p

I cannot read/watch 'pure' romances (unless you count Jane Austen as romance) - they just make me cringe. I need a werewolf or witch or loch ness monster or something thrown into the mix to liven it up or I just get bored.

For silly fun I like Ilona Andrews, I like her humour and the heroine kills things ;p

I watched that programme about it - it really is sad. That sort of thing always hits the person with a great mind.

Is it real bad? He just came out with a new book a few months ago. I hope it's not his last.

Whenever I read another one I think, "I can't wait to show this to my son someday."

As I understand it, he has trouble speaking, or rather - keeping his words focused enough to speak. This is the programme I saw, if you have the time to watch it. I know he's seriously considering assisted suicide.

I think that's where seeing the show first then picking up the books helped me see the two entities as separate things. It only took me a few days to get through three books.

I should check out both American Horror Story and Ilona Andrews! I haven't seen that or read her yet. :biggrin1:

I loved AHS, Ryan Murphy back to his creepy, twisted best.

Also sweet petite, i JUST got into the discworld novels after seeing a couple of adaptations (Ian Richardson, what a loss ]: ) but I'm not sure where to start. Is there an order? Any advice??

As an aside; I hate book publishers. I've bought "A song of ice & fire" and a couple of discworld novels since Xmas. I'm getting thru them. And huggles for your tyke!!

I think you're right - I already had the world/characters pictured in my head before the show, so a helluva lot of the stuff niggled me.

I don't watch much tv, but I enjoyed AHS - I'm a really jumpy though, so that's about my limit for scary. I think Ilona Andrew's is classed as Urban Fantasy, so it really depends if you like that kind of stuff - for me, it makes a nice change from academic reading. Sometimes it's just nice to read something frivilous ;)

I started watching it earlier today and I'll finish watching later when I get a chance. Thank you for the link. It's a fascinating lecture, but also upsetting to know that he's slowly losing his faculties.

I started with the first one, but I started reading them out of order after the first two. Here's a good guide to them. I've read almost all of them now. My favorite ones are the Death novels and The Watch novels, but I really like them all. My favorite characters are probably Death and Sam Vimes. I've enjoyed following Sam Vimes' life.

Was that the Hogfather movie? I watched it on Christmas day!

I wish I had "Where's My Cow" to read to my little tyke. He's under the weather at the moment. :puppy_dog_eyes:

I should start a Terry Pratchett thread.

I understand what you mean. The exact same thing happened to me with Anne Rice. Brad Pitt and Tom Cruise are very attractive men, but nothing like what I imagined the characters would be like and I just couldn't get past that with the movie. I might have enjoyed it if I didn't already have such a strong idea of what it should be like, but instead I was just annoyed.

I really don't think I favor certain genres. I think I like novelty, encountering things that aren't like what I've read in the past. It's the only explanation for how schizophrenic my reading tastes are. I don't really know if I'll like something until I've tried it, and there's so much in the world to try. I'll check Ilona Andrew out.

After both you and Stukay suggested AHS, I really want to check that out, too.. I'm really jumpy, like you. I look away when zombies attack in horror movies, that's how squeamish I am.

I agree, but the best vampire show will always be Buffy the Vampire Slayer! It started the whole vampire craze.

This! Buffy was the best ever.

I watched the first couple of seasons of True Blood. Gave it up after the whole dogfighting thing. I just really bothered my that they had to rub the viewers' noses in it. Was disappointed with it, anyways. As ricki876 so eloquently put it, too many overwrought, sensational plots, too many one dimensional characters, too much "when in trouble or in doubt, run in circles, scream and shout" stuff, too much stuff you have to suspend disbelief about, crappy writing, etc. So...Goodbye.

Never watched Vampire Diaries. Never saw the point. Like a television version of Twatlight.
