I have a few family members who worked in Hollywood over the many decades. An uncle who worked behind the scenes, including on "From Here to Eternity" had said Lancaster - after originally being in awe of Clift's work and style of acting and the two being somewhat aloof with each other - had pursued Clift for some time and it was whispered that one would sometimes be seen leaving the other's quarters late in the evening or early morning.
