If I'm understanding your question correctly, wouldn't that be prostitution?
Um, yes. But then again, we all whore ourselves out sometimes. Not necessarily for money, but we'll still withhold sex during an argument, for example. And if you think about it, marriage began as a fancy form of prostitution.

Prostitution is defined as: Offering sexual intercourse for pay. I may withhold sex during an argument, but that's because I'm pissed at my husband and don't want anything to do with him, not because I expect to get something back when I start putting out again.
dowry (which is what you are referring to) is defined as: Money or property brought by a woman to her husband at marriage. I had always thought of it as a means to start their life with. The money isn't necessarily given to the groom for just the sexual relations. Besides, don't you know that sex stops once you get married? :lol:

LOL Economic exchanges during marriage come in two forms. The first is dowry, as you described. The more common, though, is bride wealth. In bride wealth, the groom gives money to the bride's family.
It's difficult to describe what each one means, from an objective perspective. Bride wealth could be misogynistic, but it even occurs in some matrilocal societies, where the groom moves in with the bride's family. Dowry, which is generally restricted to Indo-Europeans, is a lot easier to understand as basically mad money for the newlyweds, but in some parts of India, women are executed if their parents renege.
There's also the third economic factor in marriage: Affinal relationships. Need a house built? Call on your in-laws.
