a simple question for the ladies, guys can answer too.
I had a discussin with my GF,she said that she can't think about nothing, and i found it very wierd.I can look at something, and for 10 minutes no thought or image will go trough my head.
Can you do that?just think about nothing?
    Thanks for the input!

Sorry Max...no such thing as a blank post...try as we might.

And back to the topic...I frequently have nothing to think about...in fact, I think about it all the time.

I think that the main thing about us saying "nothing" when prompted about what's on our minds; it's not because it would be offensive to her. It's because it would be weird as fuck.

"I'm thinking about how it would be to be a top secret spy agent. Like James Bond. I think that desk over there could be a good place to hide secret documents. And we should get a hidden room behind that bookshelf."

...yyyeah, hoping that is not just me <.<

I am always thinking. I may not be willing to share what I am thinking, and answer, "nothing," when asked. But I am always, always thinking.

Most of the time I'm thinking about something when I say "nothing." "Nothing" means I don't want to talk about whatever it is and that I'm enjoying the silence.

    "Nothing" doesn't mean something's wrong.

If you were literally thinking nothing how would you know?

Your thoughts may not be cohesive, you may have 'zoned out' but I think that 'thinking nothing' is an inaccurate way of putting it.

You can sit and stare at a blank wall and empty your mind. You can get to a point where you are having no cohesive thoughts. But there will always be some stream of consciousness flowing through your mind. So, if you're talking about turning off all purposeful, organized thought processes, that can be done. But there's always something going on upstairs.

Although, there are some people who appear to me to have nothing happening inside their heads...but most of them work at the Department of Motor Vehicles.

I agree with MB. I very often have stretches of time where I'm thinking about "nothing" but what I'm fairly sure is happening is that I and my thoughts have become unfocused. These times I usually have wonderfully strange ideas and jokes. There are forms of meditation that teach one to empty ones mind by focusing on empty or nothing. This is a misnomer because by thinking of nothing you are thinking of something. It is just a mental focal point. I highly doubt you actually think of nothing. I think it may be closer to being unfocused but that is just my opinion of course. I cant possibly know exactly whats going on in my own head much less someone else's.

It's a great skill to do what you do without thoughts racing through your mind.

Some people call this Zen Meditation.
