I am considering getting circumcised due to mild phimosis. I am 27 years old.
I have a lot of concerns though. I'm not super hung and am worried I might lose some length, and also terrified of the surgeon screwing up and ending up with something visually unappealing.
Anyone who's been circumcised as an adult, what was your experience?

On a side note, if you got it done in Alberta, Canada, I would love a recommendation for a urologist!

Why are you considering this? Many men have a tight skin. The tightness (or otherwise) of skin is a variable like the size of your feet and there isn't a right or wrong style, at least for most. It only needs attention if it is causing problems. From a UK perspective this seems to be a hang-up of USA (and Canada), in effect an invented problem. Have a look at some UK or European porn and you will see some men with tight skins.

If it's only mild, you may consider manual stretching as a more natural way to alleviate the problem without the risks of ending up with problems from the surgery. I've seen quite a few threads/comments on this from guys with phimosis who had success with it, and I'm sure some of them will chime in here in response to your post.

You need to talk with the doctor about what type of circ. you want, some are loose and you still have some foreskin, others are high and tight, this makes masturbation difficult without lube. Your scar will show stitch marks and will look different from one who was cut soon after birth.

I have a gay male friend who is very (sexually) active. He was circumcised in his mid 30s and has celebrated the act especially for the improved hygiene.

He is now in his late 50s and still quite active. It is his observation that older guys are more in demand if circumcised.

please don't get circumcised when you're old enough to feel the pain (damn I should for my own good not be saying this in public) but please know this is my own opinion and don't decide based on it

I was circumcised at age 35. I have no regrets whatsoever. I do not have suture marks as someone above posted. I recommend a high and tight cut. I know of no problem masterbating and being circumcised. There are plenty of videos on LPSG of circumcised guys masterbating.
As President Franklin D. Roosevelt once said: "There is nothing to fear but fear itself." And he was right.
I looked forward to my circumcision many years ago. It was the best thing I did for myself. I once knew a guy on here who claims to have done his own circumcision. He obtained a circumcision clamp online as well as some medical adhesive and did it himself. I guess he wanted to be circumcised and could not afford to have it done so he did it himself. Anyway that was his claim. Go for it.

If you are dead set on getting a surgical procedure and not stretching your skin a little, then I would suggest just a small vertical slit on the backside of the foreskin. My cousin had that and he is very happy with it. He still has his foreskin and all the benefits that if gives. It is just a bit looser. Just to see it, it looks the same as before, pretty much.

If I were you, I'd stretch it. Isn't it worth a try? Looks at how easy earlobes stretch.

I'm a firm believer in circumcising. Babies, adults not so much. From what you are describing, I advise speaking to your doctor about possible stretching the skin. I doubt that it will help, but it certainly is less radical than surgery, and ALL surgeries carry risks. As for the guy who gomco clamped himself, please, please DO NOT TRY TO CIRCUMCISE YOURSELF! I've seen a few cases in my day, and NONE of them were pretty, and none of them ever seemed to have achieved the desired results. We won't even discuss the gouts of blood involved. Still, if your are tight and swollen, and see no results with stretching after a month or two, it's pretty obvious the trick isn't working. Yes, it will be uncomfortable, there is healing down time, and I for one don't want to think about a big boy boner stretching sutures. But you will be pain free after you heal. There will be no compromise in your sexual abilities, despite the anti-circ propaganda you see here or on line, you will be cleaner and definitely fresher afterwards. Good luck whichever way you decide to go.

The surgeon doesn't need to "screw up" for circumcision to look visually unappealing--they are all a turn-off in my opinion. Stretching has cured just about all cases of phimosis when there's dedication. I urge you not to listen to some of the pro-circ weirdos that have already made a presence here--they aren't just proponents of circumcision, they have a disordered fetish for the highest, tightest, most restrictive circumcisions imaginable. I believe such a fascination is born about by having no control as youngsters over what was taken, a feeling of being incomplete, and a sick desire to wish it upon everyone else to make it "fair". Some of the discussions on circlist are extremely graphic and degenerate. Camps where all males are forced to get their penises amputated against their will, etc. The removal of the foreskin and associated pheromone producing glands including all other functioning aspects of the penis is emasculating. It renders what was once a fully functioning genitalia into nothing more than a finger that pisses. When someone boasts that he knows of a circumcised male that is the ripe old age of "50" who is "still able to manage an erection", your eyebrows should raise. Men, as god intended, intact and equipped with an entire penis, should be able to maintain erections until the day they die. Only in America is there such a huge issue, and it's because a great number of men have been robbed.

I was about 29 YO when I was circumcised because of mild phimosis. I was about 6 months out of USMC. The USMC was going to do it when I was at MMAF in DaNang but kept delaying it and then it was time for my discharge and I did not want that delayed as I had already been extended 1 year from my original discharge because of a deprived MOS. My Circumcision was done in a physicians office in downtown LACA. I was held about 1 hour after they did surgery and then told I could drive myself home. My GF had come with me so she drove the 7 miles or so to Glendale, CA. The circumcision was the best thing I ever did or had done to my body. It is your decision along with your physicians and maybe your mate. Don't listen to all these self centered personal opinions by people on this web site as they are very opinionated. It is just you and your physician and maybe a mate. When the end of the day gets here it is really what you and your body needs. Screwing up by the physician is always a possibility but chances are highly unlikely. I am sure you have obtained a highly recommended/qualified physician for your procedure. Here in the USA this is a very commercial procedure as many are today because of the Affordable Care Act and physicians that do that procedure and many other procedures. When I had my procedure done it was not that way. We had to go to PCP first and the get a referral if you used your health insurance. I did not want to wait that long so I paid for it out of my own pocket. I don't know what you have in Canada. Personal word of mouth is the best recommendations though. Most any visually unappealing appearances can be corrected but I am sure that will be at your expense. It is really a very simple procedure, at least here in the USA. If I were your age and I had to do it all over again I would not hesitate in doing. Oh yes, masturbation if you have a tight circumcision will require lube but a circumcision cut somewhat loose will be about the same as it would be if not circumcised. My physician as me if I did masturbate. I answered him back by telling him I started as a young boy and it would be hard to stop now and he just wrote down yes for my answer. It is your decision so please keep us informed good luck with that and I wish you the best should you decide of getting the procedure completed.

Are you only considering getting it done for yourself, no other influences?
If it's only mild, then stretching sounds like a good place to start, might not need much! Ask your doctor for a steroid cream, they work in a lot of cases with proper application. Personally, I would be looking for any non-surgical means first & if they don't work then going for the least invasive surgery that removes only as much tissue as necessary.
Remember, if you get a full circumcision & you don't like it, you can't go back!

If you are terrified, then don't do it. Try other means and when they are exhausted then try the knife. You don't have to be circumcised. They can do a slit in the foreskin on the backside and it won't look much different but the foreskin will be looser and you will still have all the benefits of your foreskin.

I'll say the same thing I told Brady217777. I had severe phimosis. It was pencil thin narrow at the tip. You can get the cream, but I used a tube of cocoa butter for stretch marks. Anything that helps with elasticity will benefit skin production. I bought craft foam from an art store, rolled it up to the diameter of the foreskin tip and used it as a retainer to keep it stretched. over time it became easier to pull it back. You can definitely grab that steroid cream and get similar if not better result from the prescription. All I can say is don't do it dry. You need a medium to help increase elasticity in your skin or you may get tears and slow skin production and healing. Also, skin grows when you aren't retaining or tensioning for cell division. Having a stable regimen of tension for 8 hours a day and keeping a separate retainer so the skin doesn't retract in size at night. I loved my foreskin. So when I was told to get chopped I did my research. Masturbating was too good for it to be lost.
One other thing they could perform is a preputioplasty. They cut a "Z" shape on either side, bottom or both at the end of your penis. After, they reposition the skin so the incision forms a "N" shape and they resuture the skin or with skin glue so the skin will be less narrow at the end. It's less invasive and you get to keep your foreskin and less painful after surgery. Some doctor don't account for your length and remove all of the inner skin, which sucks. I can't find any benefit in losing nerve endings which are more abundant at the end of a penis.

Circumcision is a lost resort. Blame America's serch for a cure all cure for pushing it to other countries as a therapeutic method to alleviate anything from saving a boy's soul from masturbating, wet dreams, symptom of urinary tract infection and STD scares. It is a replacement for a daily shower would fix. It's a fascinating procedure that has had some interesting history. Only get a circumcision if it's the last resort.

I fully understand the attitude against circumcision when it involves those who are to young to even know that it's being done.
However, grown men own their bodies. They can get piercings, tattoos and even get circumcised if they so choose. If we can recognize a woman's right to choose when it comes to her body and reproductive rights then I think that men should be extended the same privilege without having to justify their decision to others.

Absolutely!

I don't like how these threads get all "anti-American." Jews and Muslims circumcise heavily, too.

I don't know what we gain by bashing a person's nationality. It's nothing you can control. It's like being gay or Native American - you don't choose where you're born, or what makes your dick hard.

I doubt any one is anti-American here. However, actions define intentions. What it falls down to is choice, informed consent and education on the subject. Many do assume that muslims force it the practice whereas the individual does it at the age of consent. And while not all jewish circumcise it is a majority of that faith. I personally question educated community for spreading genital cutting procedures to not only male population, but female as well as there has been a rise in genital cutting and prosecution of doctors in America in the news, as you may have heard.
I myself was pushed for the procedure at a young age and for phimosis, which this discussion is about. The fear of genital cutting is real for this individual as it was for myself. Any insight on suppressing fears helps anyone who is subject to pressure. It is true that circumcision is a cure all cure in America. I've seen it first hand. I offer alternatives to an invasive procedure that should be last resort. It is obvious some people are circumsexuals who get aroused over forms of genital cutting and that's understandable that genital cutting is the greatest to happen to such a person in their sex life. However, this is a medical question and emotional outreach. The differences in these discussion should be established. For this person I hope people can find common ground in assisting this individual and not surrender to ranting or personal urges.

cockrokker, it is YOUR penis, your docsomfort. Don't let others tell you that what you find a discomfort/pain is perfectly acceptable it isn't. A penis should be free or any fear of pain when you play with it. With a slightly tight foreksin, your movements are instintively restricted to not get to that point where it is painful/not comfortable.

And if after sex, you have swelling/redness, consider that every time you have sex, it may, over time worsen the situation.

I have had progressively shortrer foreskin until my now tight circumcision. A partial circ is fine as long as you have over half ocvered when soft. Probably aim for 2/3. (otherwise it retradts too often un underwear and not enougth coverage makes dick look ugly).

If you want to be "circumcised", go for a full, tight one. I know it is hard to see the logic, but once you can't bring skin over head anymore, you are much better off with it tight on erection than loose on shaft. making skin move up to the rim doesn't stimulate that much.

Going from uncut to semi cut, you don't lose ability to movce skin up/down and remain more or less functionalilty uncut. But for a partial circ, you need to consider that all of your "faulty" skin needs to go. So depending onf your pneis, paryial may not be a workable solution.
