What has that to do with this particular girl's achievement as a student? Should we find a Chinese or German kid to enter a Constitution quiz showdown with Michelle Bachmann?

All it proves is that you have an anti-US agenda and are not above using an off-topic post to take a slam against the USA.

Neither. Many (if not the majority of) people in our country recognize there are major issues that need to be addressed within our Education system and push for needed reforms. Heck, even some students are aware of the problems. Regardless, there's no need to use a few studies that we can collectively agree on to make such a generalized comment. At least that's what I think SilverTrain was implying or suggesting.

"Proves"?

Demonstrates, maybe.

Logic not taught in H.S., I guess.

I think you guys are taking what was intended as an off-the-cuff comment that seemed mildly amusing to me, far too seriously.

I am the first to admit that my high school experience (in Canada) was largely forgettable. The key things they try to teach you there, as far as I can tell, are:

attendance/punctuality
respect for authority
work habits

I learned a hell of a lot more in university than I did in H.S.

The first one or two comments could be written off as a simple, off-the-cut comment. But now it appears you're really trying to defend it.

I learned a hell of a lot more in university than I did in H.S.

My HS experience was much, MUCH different. Before high school was even a factor, my parent and elders already instilled into me the importance of being punctual, having good work ethics and especially a respect for authority. Perhaps for me, these were more family structural and societal teachings and not something that was taught with a textbook.

I was also pretty lucky to be in a public school system that had the necessary resources, beyond a basic academic curriculum, to allow students to explore and focus on the things they wanted to do after graduation. From learning new languages, to exploring more artistic angles, to diverging into science or just becoming a great athlete, we had plenty to choose from. The ultimate goal was to help students establish a path towards individual success before going to a college or university to specialize in any particular field. Ironically, much of these things have been stripped out of our public school systems due to unnecessary state & federal budget cuts and that eventually leads to a higher number of socially uneducated people even if they earned a diploma or other piece of decorative paper that signifies they learned something.

But that's just me and just a portion of what I got out of my "public school education" in the United States... and I'm pretty sure that's not reflected within any of the links you provided earlier.

You're seeing bigots under the bed, Vinyl.

Well, if we go by the literary definition of the word some of your comments in this thread do apply. That is unless you're suggesting that my bed was created by Merriam-Webster. Remember, I'm just talking about your comments. I didn't call you one.

<argument snipped>

Well, I guess this is the Politics forum, and this is what people do here: argue over misunderstandings. Well, despite the mischaracterizations in your latest post, I'm not going to bother continuing.

Feel free to put another notch in your 'gunslinger of the Politics forum' belt. I'm outta here. Best wishes.

I couldn't have been any clearer with how I explained myself. I never once attacked you personally, nor did I try to mischaracterize you. Even the most mild mannered and logically aware person may occasionally make a bigoted statement. That doesn't necessarily reflect you as a person, unless you want to assume a victimizing position and play it off as such. Nothing you typed was that cryptic or exceptionally hard to figure out. I clearly understood what you were trying to say. So did SilverTrain, nudeyorker and others who found your first comments to be a bit troubling. If I wanted to attack you personally, it would have been easy to just engage in the usual gutter talk and berate you with a fury of four and five letter descriptive adjectives. But nobody here did that. Therefore, you're leaving this discussion on your own accord and not due to something I didn't do.

I know my fabled reputation precedes me here... but I won't let anyone fabricate a phony incident using such beliefs as a catalyst, and at my expense.

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh! A warm, tinkling Joycean stream of concsiousness. Scholars opine that the Joycean ellipsis indicated a strong, emphatic kegel squeeze, punctuating the flow. :biggrin1:

Possibly, but in Nick-of-the-sixes case it's a simple matter that he's never learned how to write.

That's the only smart thing I've ever seen you do. I'm glad to see you admit you're whipped and go away.

Pizza man Herman Cain has joined the ranks of Republicans who invoke the Constitution but have no idea what is and what is not in it (source, with video):

ThinkProgress.com said:
During GOP presidential candidate Herman Cain’s campaign announcement on Saturday, the former pizza executive took a moment to lecture the country on its need to “reread the Constitution”:

CAIN: We don’t need to rewrite the Constitution of the United States of America, we need to reread the Constitution and enforce the Constitution. . . . And I know that there are some people that are not going to do that, so for the benefit of those who are not going to read it because they don’t want us to go by the Constitution, there’s a little section in there that talks about “life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.”

You know, those ideals that we live by, we believe in, your parents believed in, they instilled in you. When you get to the part about “life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness,” don’t stop right there, keep reading. Because that’s when it says “when any form of government becomes destructive of those ideals, it is the right of the people to alter or abolish it.” We’ve got some altering and some abolishing to do!

The phrases that Cain attributes to the Constitution come from the Declaration of Independence. :dunce:

That would be a fascinating event, but it's highly unlikely that MB would expose herself to the sort of publicity stunt that could permanently destroy her political career.

Was what I was going to say. Going up against this young woman would be by all definitions - Political Suicide.

I'm sure this 10th grader has a great wealth of knowledge. Either that or she's REALLY sure of herself. Either way, it would be entertaining to see.
