Just thought i would solicite Thoughts about this organization from this group: ACLU {American Civil Liberties Union}..... I am hoping that anyone who has something of value to offer this thread will restrict there particular thoughts about this group to 1 response. I am wondering where this groups place will figure in the future as well as it's contributions to the past {or even any failures}.

Me and the ACLU are going to sue you because you are restricting my right to speaking as freely as I please by limiting the number of responses I may have.

I think sometimes they go too far....HOWEVER, the ACLU could never exist in Hitler's Germany or Stalin's Russia. So it speaks very well of our country that we have groups like this that are watchdogs on the government, and moreover the government protects their (ACLU's) right to criticize them (gov't)

Not true, as i said, i am hoping for informed thoughts on this organization. What i am hoping to avoid with the 1 response, is a domination of the thread by any 1 individual {the guilty know who they are.}.... I do not think it's impossible to express one's thoughts on a matter in 1 thread entry.

I like how many on the left pride themselves with the ACLU being “their” pet organization and many on the right despising them as enemies. Civil Liberties don’t know party lines and they are one of the few pro-action on keeping it that way, past and present for the good of the whole.

The AkCLU is to be credited with winning the court case which got domestic partnership benefits to partners and children of GLBT public employees here.

My admiration for them is equal that for Tensin Gyatsu.

The ACLU, one of the groups most maligned by right wingers, is the most Patriotic group of legal activists in the nation.

The ONLY thing they do, is to defend CONSTITUTIONAL rights.

They help ENFORCE separation of church and state.
They help ensure EQUAL treatment before the law.
They defend freedom of speech...

And, even though the right wingers don't realize it... they also defend citizen's rights to bear arms.

The attitude of the ACLU is that the Constitution is the founding document and the definition of what it means to be American.

And they simply insist that our government and elected officials COMPLY with the constitution.

Anyone not in favor of the ACLU ought to just pack their shit and get the fuck out.... IF you don't agree with them, then you don't agree with the constitution.
And if you don't agree with the constitution... live elsewhere.

I gotta strongly disagree here. Yes, they advocate that organizations right to free speech but it’s a slippery slope when you start taking something like that away.

QFT and Agreed.

Freedom is freedom. People have to be free to exp[ress even stupid, hateful, or ridiculaous ideas...

Just as Jon Stewart is free to ridicule them mercilessly for believing such idiocy.

ACLU 's argument that "money = speech" undermines democracy

contrary to the effusive postings here, they are a serious threat to the ideals of American democracy

their posturing also is not neutral

Are you sure they have defended NAMBLA? I had not heard of it, if so.

They have defended American Nazi's and KKK. They had a black lawyer heading up the latter case, in Virginia a few years back.

They also got part of an election reform initiative here, that I thought was a good idea, removed. A good idea, but unconstitutional.

the ACLU was founded with the best of intentions and for many years did good work for a noble cause, however in the age of newspeak their morphing from defending liberties to demanding restrictions has vitiated all the good work that they once did and that they sometimes still do ...

It's a better country with them than without them. The only conservatives who do not want to understand the ACLU are fascists as the ACLU is ultimately a conservative organization by every standard.
