Run as a pure feudal territory for more than 450 years, Sark’s ‘Chief Pleas’ or meeting house of hereditary landowners, voted on Wednesday in favour of introducing a transitional 28 person parliament with 16 elected members and 12 non-elected tenants, the current Seneschal, or chief judge, of the island, Reg Guile, said.

And they approved plans for a referendum on full democracy in 2011.

Sark's current parliament has remained unchanged since Elizabeth I sent 40 Jersey men to subdue piracy in the 16th century. The parliament is still made up of 39 landowners, who are all required by law to own a musket, and a chief, or seigneur, who owns everything on the island.

Man... those 39 landowners must be really old by now if they've been in charge there since the 16th Century. No wonder they want to retire.
