Urban/hip-hop culture had a profound impact in the fashion world in the 90s which is why so many designers opted to more baggy and lose fitting clothing as well as more colorful attire. The style wasn't intentional. Younger kids were getting hand-me-downs from their older siblings that they couldn't quite fill in and all of a sudden it just became a trend.

Who wouldve thought that some lovely (not ghetto) inner city kids from nyc would change the way we wear clothes in western civilization? Its a beautiful thing. Clothes aren't even really worn baggy anymore but still a bit more loose fitting and skinny and fitted have come back in style still with large elements of urban fashion.

Having a played both Basketball and running Track in the seventies I not only liked them but wore them. Unfortunately like most fashion it changes with time. I if your old enough to remember this you also remember when we wore short cut off jean shorts too.

I do however disagree strongly with the asinine statement that the NEW fashion trend has something to do with ghetto style fashions – what kind of prejudice crap is this.

All you have to do is look at my profile photo which was taken within this decade. I have the legs and the body to enjoy wearing them and the looks l get from both men and women. Sadly I still think it is sad in this day and age (2011) we are still identifying someone by what they wear or other stupid criteria. First of all I am heterosexual and love it no mater who the viewer is attention – it’s a Compliment not Sexual Assault when someone even of the same sex makes a comment. Look weren’t we all so sure that Rock Hudson had to be straight, I mean look at the women he had swooning over him and wasn’t he after all a picture of macho first hand?

Personally I still wear Speedo’s much like I did when I was a competitive swimmer and I race in Onion Skins when I run. Why can’t we just all go NUDE? As a avid Naturalist I have been very happy that most in the Nudist community aren’t hung up with all this crap around clothing and when you’re nude it is doubtful anyone can guess your sexual identity either so carefree and non-judgmental. Europeans are so much more at ease with all this. It is sad that we descend from a small group of people who sought out religious freedoms that they felt they were denied in Europe only to become a country of prudes and contradiction. You can buy porn at 7 Eleven and alcohol but we still judge people so narrow mindedly.

Pro – short shorts or whatever you want to wear! As a Marine I fought for your right do whatever you want as long as it is legal why cant we all just get a long?

I prefer above the knee and more of a snug fit but with a very flexible fabric for work outs. I don't like any of the x large or baggy styles. I feel it promotes obesity in the young people. The message of health is finally getting across. It is time that as a society, we not only trim the lard but also start dressing in a more groomed manner. Everyone can harp about comfort all they want, but hiding tons of lard under huge tentlike clothing is not a good example to set for young people. That is my rant for the day. Thank you.

Many track and cross country teams are switching over to spandex shorts. Under Armour and Nike Pro being the big name brands. What used to be called spandex is now labeled as compression shorts. Under Armour only offers them in a couple of basic colors. The black and navy seem to be the most popular because they don't show as much. White and gray are also available. Typically the guys who are wearing the white ones put another pair of shorts on top. They come in two lengths, long and short. So far, I have only seen the long ones being worn. There is no chance of flopping out the bottom but they can be revealing. It is surprising to see the young guys wearing these since most of them are so uptight about their bodies.

I continue to wear "green silkies" aka "ranger panties" issued as PT shorts in USMC. You can buy them online from Soffe (look in the 'Military' section). Eastbay.com sells 2" and 2.5" split and half-split running shorts - same ones my college uses and my high school & the local HS cross-country teams wear. Both have liners, but the Soffe brand are still regulation nylon with same nylon liner - standard sizing is fine for most of us "bigger" guys, but if you want a little more support for your equipment, go one size down. The Soffe brand allows a lot of flopping and won't hide even a semi, and certainly shows if you've got a bigger package, so keep that in mind. The liner on the Eastbay brand is a little snugger, but it's still going to show what you've got.

For me, I'm proud of my package and don't care who sees what, even like to show it off whenever possible (and at least semi-appropriate)!

Where can I find old school or retro phys ed shorts?
80's style, tight, cotton, 4 inch inseam classic phys ed shorts.

Prefer a sporting goods store but I've tried a few already and haven't found them so I may have to go to an online source, if there are any.

Thanks.

I think today's gym short styles are the result of guys not doing leg workouts. I have huge quads and like to show them off when I can but shorts that go down to the knee or lower hide the effort I have put into my workouts. Swimsuits are the same. They shouldn't be called board shorts they should be called bored shorts...
