Tipping

This is LPSG; and no one made any kind of a sexual joke about the Tip :D

On a serious note, I over tip everyone. Waiters, cab drivers, delivery men, repair men. I do not follow a percentage rule I just leave or give what I feel

Same here, basically. I can't remember all the rules, so I do what I feel is appropraite.

Jobs that can earn tips are exempt from minimum wage laws. Strange but true.

Most waiters and waitresses earn 2.50 an hour, plus tips.
This is so horrible!!!! 2.50 per hour... I thought slavery is history

A tip should be an expression of a good service, but no one should depend on it to make a living.

My guess is that the present arrangement grew "organically" as a characteristic of the market. If waitstaff earn tips, the employer can pay them less. As the employer pays them less, they rely on tips more.

I dated a barmaid for a while. On a weekend night she'd make $200 in tips. Add that to whatever she picked up other nights of the week, and she could pocket several hundred bucks a week, tax free, in addition to wages. It's not a long term way to make a living, but for a single girl in her 20s, it's not too bad.

Trouble was, she'd go out drinking after her shift and drop $20 tips on her bartender friends and go home broke.

She was hot, though. Had done some swimsuit modeling.

I worked as a waiter during my studies, I know how nice it can be to earn a good tip... my income was 50% salary 50% tip, but different to the american 2.50 did I got 7.50 per hour. - as a student very comfortable

The problem isn't the total earning, but situations you have to rely only on your salaries. What happens if you get sick? In this case you only get the 2.50...

The whole tip system, where tips replace the salary has only one profiter: the employer

They are not tips, they are donations. If the wage you are working your arse off for is so low you are unable to survive or live upon, any tips you receive can be regarded as donations.

That's what they call it when we give money to overseas countries where their workers are being paid a pittance to survive, so they rely on donations from other areas to be able to live. Tips?

This is a tip....Be good to each other.

This is a tip off......Donald Trump loves money.

This is another tip

I disagree. It's a donation if we give them money for nothing in return. We are, in fact, paying their salary with tips.

Years ago the income tax rules changed to where food service workers who received tips must report tips based on a percentage of their salary. And it was a lowball figure at that time.

I had a bartender friend in Dallas who told me when it started that a number of waitresses went to talk to the owner to complain.

One asked "what if I don't make that much in tips? Do I still have to report it?"

The owner replied, "If you don't make that much in tips then you're not doing your job and you won't be working for me."

The U.S. has a tipping culture that won't be broken anytime soon. But to me the sooner the better. Everyone should be able to make a living wage.

Perados, you are over estimating workers rights in the USA. If you are a waiter or waitress making $2.50 and hour and get sick you will get, in most cases...absolutely nothing. There are no sick days and in many cases no maternity leave either.

Am I the only one that thinks that this is deplorable that someone in a country like the USA pays there workers 2.50 an hour? It's shameful that that is even considered an acceptable wage (tips or no tips).

Right?! You can't even live on what the standard minimum wage.

T.I.P.S - To Insure Proper Service. From '03 to '08 I had a part-time job as a delivery driver at eight different Pizza Huts in two states. As drivers we did get minimum wage as we also worked in the store. Dishes, taking orders, cleaning, folding boxes, etc. We also got a portion of the delivery charge. Why they kept any of it was beyond me as we used our own cars. I don't believe that we made close to what a good waiter or waitress makes in a decent restaurant, though. Still, wasn't too bad. I averaged about $21.00 an hour. This of course was reduced to about $15 when fuel and maintenance were taken out.

And if you're sick too often or too long you're likely to lose your job.

What about German beer halls? Didn't they have a system where the waitress buys the beer from the manager, then she is responsible for making back her money plus whatever profit when she sells to her tables?

I have heared about it but doesn't even happen in 1 out of 1000 cases.

As a german waiter you get something between 6.50 and 9.00 euro a hour, plus the tip you make - it should be 10%, but in reality it's just around 7% - 8%.
And the tip is tax free, as long as you don't have to share it with other employees.
