..that IS the question.

'Whether 'tis nobler..to suffer the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune...
...or to take arms, and by opposing, to die; to sleep -- to sleep, perchance to dream..ah! but there's the rub!
For what dreams may come when we've shoved off this mortal coil...'

Why...WHY be? Why not, NOT be?

..that IS the question.

'Whether 'tis nobler [...] to suffer the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune or to take arms [...] and by opposing end them. To die, to sleep [...] to sleep, perchance to dream: ay, there's the rub,
For [...] what dreams may come when we've shuffled off this mortal coil [...]'

Fixed that for ya! (Sorry - I know it is pedantic, but it causes me physical pain when people misquote that - I don't mind the omissions, that's normal - if you mark them).

Why...WHY be? Why not, NOT be?

You mean we should all kill ourselves... Um... lemme think about that.... er... NO! :biggrin1::wink::tongue:

say not cease for cease is soon enough
and lasting.

For all prior history you were not.

for a brief glimmer of time you are.

and then

for all future time, you will be not.

Seems to me you get an awful lot of Not being
and just a tiny slice of being.

Given that reality.... why not savor that tiny slice?

The slings and arrows my ass.

Even the slings and arrows are a form of ecstasy compared to an eternity of non-being.

Think of it like a movie.

would you be interested in a movie that had no conflict? No drama?
Can't have a happy ending without some obstacle to overcome....

And if your life doesn't have enough slings and arrows to provide adequate contrast for the good....

then you would watch soap operas to soak up some imaginary strife.

Life is bliss.
Even the worst parts...

Don't be in a hurry to die... its the one thing you never have to worry about missing out on.

No, but why bother to carry on?

Because, contrary to what appears to be popular belief, life is NOT a giant shit sandwich out of which we are forced to take daily bites.

Life is, as Phil says in slightly different words, a wonderful gift.

Even the slings and arrows are a form of ecstasy compared to an eternity of non-being.

I agree... But, and I'm saying this only because I can, that would imply some kind of awareness of the 'not being' when you get there - which you, time and time again, argue against.:eek:

:biggrin1::wink: Just playing, Phil... no need to deny, I know you didn't mean it that way.

Never cared much for Hamlet. Far too overblown in popularity and until there's a good version of it done with an all nude cast, I will maintain my viewpoint.

I don't see how it implies any such thing.

Non-being is the opposite of being. The opposite of awareness.

This brief moment is all we get... savor it all, both bitter and sweet...

Delight is fleeting... and even suffering is short lived.

Yes, as they say, its not that life is short.... Its just that you are dead for so damned long.

Actually, I am with Phil all the way on this one. Every breath we take is a miraculous and precious event.

As for Shakespeare, I sometimes have trouble understanding the dialog, until I hear it acted by really top notch actors. There is a level of talent above which every word suddenly becomes modern and clear, and the actor seems to own the phrases as if they just made them up.

At that point, there is nothing else like watching a Shakespeare play. My experiences of that caliber performance comes from occasional trips to Stratford, Ontario.
